I've been lurking for years on this site, and really enjoy reading about the projects and ideas that this group of people share. I have always been "challenged" in my calling ability. This fall, I decided it's time to for me to learn a good feeding chuckle and hen squeal. I have not found a call I like, sooo.....
I decided to make a few duck calls. I'm hoping to get some feedback on the choice of wood finish. I'm planning to use spar varnish, thinned for the first few coats, building to unthinned for the final coats. Long term, I have seen this process work really well on pine used on pinic tables. The only other finish I've seen that works well in a hunting environment is gun stock oil finishes. I've also been playing around with shellac, and this may be a good option for a sealer coat.
