Cans on the Detroit River

Hi guys, I've been member here for quite a while but have never posted. I check the classifieds once in a while.

Another member thought some you might like this can photo I made last week on the lower Detroit River during an aerial waterfowl survey with the Michigan DNR. We figure there's over 10,000 in this group and we saw several other rafts close in size to this one.

Hope the upload works! Third time's a charm....

Thanks for taking a look, I know it looks pretty rough at under 100 KB.

What a fantastic decoy spread!!!

Seriously, thanks for posting. That is a picture is amazing. And if you're like me, you're wondering "how do I get a sneak boat out on the ice?"

GREAT pic!!! I grew up in Allen Park, MI and had a lot of fun on both sides of that river. US / Canada. (thankful to still be around to enjoy this picture too! lol)

Dave, great picture I no longer see you on the photography sites you used to frequent and miss seeing your pictures, (your thread on your trip to the Arctic for Brant was always my favorite there, and way up in the top three of any I've ever seen)....and you took me to school once on White Rump i.d. which was appreciated....are you posting anywhere these days?

David~

Great photo!

I could not help but notice Steve Sutton's mention that you had an earlier post re Brant in the Arctic. I banded Brant on Baffin Island with Austin Reed in the mid-80s. I had put together a whole slide show on the adventure (pre-digital days). Unfortunately, I left the show behind in the NYSDEC Long Island office when I came north in '94 - and no one has been able to find the show since. (Copying and "archiving" images in so much easier now.) Is your post still available anywhere?

All the best,

SJS

Wow, great photo. Does the river completely freeze and if not, do the birds winter there? Also, what is the food source that's keeping them around?

Thanks for posting.

Mike

Thanks for all of your comments guys!

Brad, yeah, that's exactly what I thought!

Phil, I used a Nikon D300 & 70-200mm f/4 from a Cessna Amphibian.

Steve & Steve, I still post photos, mostly on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DavidStimacPhotography?ref=hl

The Tutakoke Brant camp stuff is on my blog along with lots of other babble.... Part 1 https://davidstimac.wordpress.com/2...kwim-delta-subarctic-waterbird-paradise-pt-1/

Part 2 https://davidstimac.wordpress.com/2...kwim-delta-subarctic-waterbird-paradise-pt-2/

There's more on there with a couple return trips if you click on "Yukon" in the subjects box on the right side and there's also a Norway trip for eiders if you can't get enough arctic birds!

Mike, there's always some open water on the Detroit & St. Clair rivers. The cans are eating wild celery. If that is unreachable due to ice cover, they have to turn to zebra & quagga mussels. Sometimes, even gizzard shad.
