During the break in the Champlain Lake zone I was able to get the boat switched over from fishing to duck hunting mode. John Bourbon and I decided to meet at the launch at 5:15. We were the first ones and managed to launch before anyone else showed up. Because of the recent rains the ducks have a lot of options other than the lake, but we gave the lake a shot. We had a dozen goose floaters and combination of modified LL Bean and Bourbon originals for duck decoys. The Yellow lab is Bullwinkle (Bully). It was as bluebird as a day can get, but we had several opportunities and a damn good time. Bully did well, and as usual, we grilled wild game for lunch. Today was 2011 Goldeneye in a honey teriyaki glaze with thin sliced apple and smoked gouda melted over the top.

There is no doubt that you picked a very good spot to hunt with the success that you two had. Congrats.

David, you are right! Sometimes I forget how spoiled we are here. On January 1, 2012 we left at midnight to head to my buddy Scott's house. He has Corn fields right off the Hudson. 4 hours of fog and black ice later we arrived with white knuckles and a splitting head ache. I'm glad that I don't have a 3 or four hour drive every time I want to hunt.

Yep, that was a fun day! In case anybody's wondering, the mergansers are destined to be sausage. Mix them 2 to 1 with lamb and grill with bue cheese sprinkles over them...
