Decoy damage

Who needs enemies when you've got friends that will do this to your decoys? Eric, if you happen to read this post, this is one of the decoys I showed you last week.

battle scars!! I have some doozeys as my friends find it hilarious. I will try to remember to grab some pics in the next couple days as I am picking up the rig.

If they only took out one decoy, you have better friends than I do!!

Was looking at some old decoys on a collector site and they had X-rays of the old decoys so you could see how the heads where attached and the decoys where all full of BB's!

That is a remarque---just reseal, touch up and go on---Remember, they are decoys, not decor, and, yes, occasionally, one will get shot in the line of work.
Prime example--I make cork dekes for our host in Argentina, simply because noone makes sliver teal, speckled teal, and chiloe widgeon.
Anyway, i made a pair of speckled teal for him this year, and took them to the worlds, for giggles.
They placed second in the puddle duck end of the comp--not too shabby for a pair of aliens!
First day out, my partner, Bob and I are gunning the cork rig-- a gang of specks come in and on the first volley, one of the specks takes a good charge, along with seven of his live amigos!
Since i do not have sealer, paint etc., at La Gringa, it gets shelved--If used up here, it would stay the season, then get repaired in the shop after everything came off the marsh.
Enjoy! That is a great memory of a hunt with a friend that you will long remember.
Hope he killed a redhead during the incident!

I know where there are about 150 decoys that look like in Western Kentucky...Just natural part of the hunt especially for diver hunting...It is not considered damage...But treasured moments...

Regards,

Kristan

LOL...That's when you know you and your decoys are doing their job! Be thankful your buddy shot when he did. If he'd waited any longer to shoot that deke would be saw dust! A little puddy and touch paint and it'll be good as new.

Take care,

Ed L.

Decoys that are used for their intended purpose will always need repairs.

All those old perfect decoys in original paint were decoys that just weren't good enough to be hunted!

Kyle,
I expected to see a broken bill or cracked head or something along those lines. All I see is a redhead with a little make-up on and who doesn't like to see that? I like George's line that it's a decoy not decor.

Hey Kyle, that damage is part of the decoy's history. Get a permanent pen and write a remarque on the bottom of the decoy who did it and how/when/where it happened. Some day you'll look back on it and laugh. Character builder...

Just my two cents...

I've got a brant in the boat right now with similiar character marks. The first day it was in the rig it happened. It was only my seven year old son and I hunting. When we pulled the rig he looked at it and said "I didn't do that!" I suppose he didn't! I still remember the buffie drake almost slamming into the decoy when he hit the water :)

Shot damage is why i hunt over cork, urethane or styrofoam decoys. Older corks usually are worth more if they have a pellet or two in them.
Bill.

The first decoys I made a few years ago are covered in battle scars! One of the Bluebills even has a big chunk of wood missing from the head....it has now been named "Chip"!
