DECOY MOLDS

HELLO EVERYBODY. I love duck hunting in Northwest Pa for puddlers and divers on lake Erie. I am new to carving decoys, and have made several attempts at basswood decoys (my father runs a lumber yard and I have an unlimited supply of 8/4-2" basswood) however, I also inherited some Decoys Unlimited molds. I have been searching for the "plastic" for the molds and cant seem to find decent information on how and where to buy it from. I would love to make the bodies out of foam and add my caved heads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use two part urethane foam. It will be much easier. Wax the mold before you use the foam. Do a search on it you will find plenty of info on it.

Andy,

You might talk to Lou Tisch at Lock Stock and Barrel. He is a wealth of knowledge and has a great web site.

Good luck

Put out a hail call for Scott Farris on this page. He has a tutorial posted and will answer
any of your questions.

Go to US Composites as previously mentioned. I used 8 lb for the head and 5 lb for the bodies.... I wanted a little better screw holding power.... If you are buying the 5 gallon pails the will make 5 lb for you. 2 lb will not be durable. I have a picture of a decoy of mine in the driveway.... with the front wheel of a 2500 4x4 Cummins on top of the decoy!!!! NO damage. 4 lb will probably work just fine.

4# foam should be just fine. 2# foam you will have to burlap which adds to the cost per decoy, but you will get more per pour as it expand 25-30% the volume compared to the 4 #
