Dodge and Krowl suffered some damage

I finally got a little caught up on my outdoor chores this weekend. I got the new carb installed on the leaf vacuum, and managed to get up all the leaves on the areas of the lawn I am allowed to cut right now, as there are flowers in some areas that the bees need right now.

One of the projects I was dreading was the tree laying on one of my storage tents. The Dodge and Krowl was in that tent, up on sawhorses. A limb came down and crushed the tent, and was resting on the Scooter. It did not appear that the limb had done any damage, but once the limbs were off the tent, I found that the frame of the tent did punch a hole, about 8 inches long by about 3 inches wide. It appears to have broken through between frames and cracked broke the thin 1/4" decking and glass. Looking inside I don't see any water damage, but the mice found their way in.

I placed some mothballs inside the hull, moved the hole away from the hole in the tent, and put a cover over the perforation incase some rain leaks in again.

One more project for the Summer!

Good morning, Dave~

Very sorry to hear about the damage. Our super-heavy mid-March snow brought lots of limbs down - but no damage to boats, vehicles or building - just tore some of my older storage tarps (3 replacements ordered yesterday).

I was planning to write you about your Dodge & Krowl Scooter - about construction details.

You mentioned the deck frames. "My" D& K (actually belongs to Paul McDuffie of Gilgo) has bent - i.e., steamed and not sawn - deck frames and floor frames. Note, also, the notched (mortised) chine log:

The bottom planking is batten seam - the light battens clench nailed over the bottom seams.

Here's a broader view....before the First Vacuuming.... Note the broad central keelson.

Do these details square with your vessel?

BTW: I'm trying to learn more about Dodge & Krowl. They were listed in the September 1931 issue of MotorBoating magazine....

I knew that they were on Orowoc Creek in Islip - mostly pre-WW II. (I grew up in East Islip but my grandfather worked right on Orowoc Creek.) John Krowl was listed in the 1940 census as a "ship builder" with his own shop. I have written to the Islip Town Historical Society and (I hope) a living descendant - in hopes of finding old photos or documents from the company.

Best of luck with your repair!
