dogs & boats

My lab passed last year, but he use to climb in using the buba-step that we used. I had to put longer standoffs on it though to get it away from the boat further. I got it from war eagle.

Hope that helps!

Been using the scruff of his neck but one of my students is in the process of building me a dog ladder. He's been in and out of different boats that way.

I've done both the dog ladder and pulling over the gunnels. I highly recommend the ladder approach. So much easier on the dog and my back. When I switched to the ladder, I worked the dog in the garage with the ladder attached to the boat and using "kennel" to come in the boat via the ladder. Once she got the hang of the ladder, we hit the water. I anchored in the shallows and got her use to the ladder again by standing outside of the boat and guiding her on the ladder with a short retrieve. I then sent her after a bumper from the boat and upon her return, I splashed the water near the top of the submerged ladder so she could find the step and come in the boat. Once at the side, a little pressure on the back of her head and she is in the boat. I never trained her to shake on my command, so I had about a second to back up once she was on board or it was shower time. Hope it helps

0I have a ladder. I feel its to much of a pain in the ***. One more piece of equiptment to take up space and get in the way. When I'm gunning in the ocean I almost alawys have to get off anchor because of the tide so the boat is usually under way toward Gus. He come around the to the transom gives me the bird and he lifts himself up with a little help from me. Man does he bring alot of water on board with him.

I agree Jack, I don't understand why so much time is consumed on this topic. Train your dog to get in the boat and a ladder isn't worth thinking about (unless the dog is old or fat). Dog comes to boat, puts his feet up on gunwale, put pressure on back of dog's neck and he pops right in.

Side stern or where ever-scruff of the neck,I bought one of those Avery dog vest with the slots to pick up the dog,I like it and its a little easier on his neck and throat.Ladders? how much more sh-t can you fit in the boat?? Good Luck!!

Hand on the back of the neck, like others have said . . .

He hasn't done a ton of boat work, so his hiccup is getting his feet on the gunwale. Needs some guidance there a lot, but once those front feet are there, pop! he's in.

That is how we do it with the TDB...

Bit on the Honker I have built in steps on the transom... Works for the dog... for people to get in and out.. and a nice platform to stand on and pee off of!

What Scott said.

Dog gets to boat. Puts feet up. Had to back of head for support and dog is in boat on his own power pushing his neck off of my hand. I dont lift.

Deep big boat might need a ladder but not a low rig.
