Ed Conklin BBSB information and help

Fellas,

First of all I'm a new member here and have to say this is one of the best websites I've seen. I'm a big fan of small boats and I hunt a lot, and it seems like you'all have a ton of knowledge and really enjoy the sport and what goes with it.

As for the question, I'm interested to see if anyone has any information on a boatbuilder named Ed Conklin from NJ, or know anything about my 14' sailing sneakbox (built in 1974). After many years of admiring my grand fathers, I was finally given the boat. It's pretty heavy. It does have a mast and sail, but it is definitely built to hunt from also. It's glass over cedar with a canvas deck.

It would be great to learn more about it. Does anyone know of the builder? Did he make many boats? Due to it's size and weight, is it more of a "hybrid" type box to both sail and hunt out of??

One last question, the nails used to secure the "toe rail" are all rusted out. I'm assuming these are relatively easy to replace, but any insight on that project would also help.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Welcome to the site Toby. Is there any way you could post pics? It sounds like a cool boat.

A location would help too - we like to know who we're talking with (and where they live)!

Kevin and Pete,

Thanks for the reply. I'll post pictures of the boat after this coming weekend and also update my location information.

In the mean time, I live in Maryland and mostly hunt the Chesapeake Bay region, but used to hunt the Delaware Bay marshes. I Know the boat is from New Jersey.

Thanks very much.

Toby, I wonder if the boat builder is a relative of Hurley Conklin, one of the great Jersey decoy carvers! If I was a betting man I would say yes. Sorry that I can't help but this may be a start. Best of luck.................Kevin
