Father/Son Sunfish Conversions

My son and I have been talking and planning about building a pair of boats for duckhunting. We hunt the NJ Coastal and South Zones and do a combination of divers and puddlers. Currently we hunt out of a 16' Alumacraft Waterfowler. We have had a lot of fun in that boat, but we are looking to switch up our game a little and look into something more like a sneak box. After considering the various Hybrid boat styles, the BBSBs and even a couple of the Devlin designs, my son and I decided on doing sneak boat conversions to a couple of Sunfish hulls. We have read several posts here on the board, over on DuckHuntingChat and general Google searches on the topic. A search on Craigsllist produced a gentlemen in DE that had a couple of hulls for sale at $50 a piece. Yesterday we made the drive from South NJ to DE to pick up two hulls and bring them home.

My son is currently 11 y.o. The goal is to have them ready for next season, not this winter, but the winter of 2013. The overarching goal is to have a boat that my son can operate on his own when he turns 13 y.o. My son, has cut a couple of lawns and saved up his own money to pay for his own hull. He is the proud owner of his own boat!!!

Here are some pics of the unloading, inspecting and initial teardown of my son's boat.

Just unloaded from the utility trailer.

The hull had gotten water inside and the foam was waterlogged. This hull weighed significantly more than the other. Ultimately the decision was to remove the fiberglass decking to remove all of the foam and fiberglass cockpit.

This was our manageable project for the day and made for a good stopping point. I think we will likely strip my hull down next. Then we can make the measurements and layout lines on each boat at the same time and hopefully save some time on the build along the way.

We have several pictures of Leonard's friend's boat printed out and hanging in the shop as guidance for the build. We hope to have our boats look like his when we are done. Hopefully by the end of next summer we will have two boats that look an awful lot like this one.

I will do my best to keep you guys posted along the way.

Nice start to what should be a great father/son project. Be sure to keep us informed as the progress continues. It will be nice to follow along.

Thanks Dave. I am really looking forward to this project with my son. I know he is really looking forward to the build as well. Plus, I think he likes me calling him Captain now :)

A question: in regards to the support of the future decking, should the ribs and knees be about 12" apart? Or will 16" do? Not really sure how much support to put in.

We plan to add a transom for an electric trolling motor or a 2-3hp gas engine. As well as a front and rear sealed area for flotation foam. How do I calculate the volume of foam that I will need in each of those areas to float the boat if it were to get swamped?

Thanks

Thats a great project y'all have!
Do it right, and his & his son/daughter will be hunting out of those boats in 20 years!

Looks more like a Son/Father project to me. All I see you doing is taking pictures of your son doing all the work. I'm guessing you probably paid fo rthe sunfish as well.

All kidding a side, what a great project for the two of you. The smile of your boy's face says it all. Can't wait to see the final results.

Somebody has to document the work :) He paid for his own boat!

He shovels sidewalks in the winter, cuts lawns in the summer and saves up money from gifts. He has a pretty good head on his shoulders for an 11 y.o.

I assumed too much regarding you fronting the bucks to buy the boat. You have much to be proud of.

Great project. Where in south jersey are you guys located. I'm in Cape May Court House and have a small wood shop if you ever need a tool or need to stop by and cut something let me know. Good luck. Luke

Luke, I appreciate the offer. I am over in Chery Hill. Nice job on the ship beds in the other post. They are really nice. The ladder is very impressive.

Sorry its been a long day. I just remembered mailing the lofting book to you. Kind of a long drive just to borrow a tool. Good luck with the build. keep us posted on his progress. Let me know if you are looking for another sunfish. I have one I started to convert and never finished. I would sell it and the trailer its on for cheap. Luke

I am sure this will give him time to earn the money to pay for all the materials needed to complete the project the way you want to see it. Great learning experience for the both of you.
