Filson wildfowlers hat maintenance

I've had this hat for years, it wears like armor, and I love it.
But the wool lining is getting kind of funky from sweat, etc.
Can't just throw the hat in the washer because of the wax cloth outer shell. So the question is how to clean the lining without damaging the water repellancy of the outer material.
Also, is there a risk of the lining shrinking, etc.?

I'm currently thinking of hand washing with Woolite, but don't want to trash a $70 hat, so I thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks

Bill,

I have the same hat and it too has been on my head for years. I wouldn't think of washing it. Wool is a natural deodorizer. I guess I'd just put it out on the clothes line for a day or so to air out and call it good. I suppose if you really had to do something, maybe rinse it with plain water before hanging it out on the line to dry.

I have a Filson hat also but not the one that has a liner. Just the original tin cloth packer hat. I have found that when I use it as a water dish for the dog it seems to be more waterproof, something to do with the dog slime. ;-)). Funny thing is how well it stays on my head too. Love that tin cloth!!

Hi there Bill - If I was you I'd contact Filson's for instructions.... like you said don't want to mess up a $70 hat...

I guess I have been lucky in the one I have had for 18+ years now.. other than the dirty look it has (character I say) and the fact that my son has taken over it - its been a great one... i just recently picked up another Wildfolwer from a member here although its not the Tin cloth like my old one... I like it cause its softer... and its fits my big old head.

I just hand wash with mild soap and let dry...If you are worried about wax...Rewax the hat next year...Wax is only $9.99 a can...

Regards,
Kristan

Yes hand wash ,I wear mine wet till it dries. Wool shrinks the more you agitate so definitely not in a machine.
