has anyone tried using one of the cheap metal dectors to find shot in birds
if so did it work and what kind was it i got some $$$$$ crowns

I guess after hitting too many missed shot my wife Barb got me one of the hand held wands for Xmas a couple years back. I ave not been real successful at using it even on the larger BB size steel pellets. In theory it's a great idea but getting it to work is another mater.

Hopefully others have figured out the secret, or got a better unit to recommend.

Generally I shoot my birds in the head... typically 1 or 2 pellets... but if you have a very powerful magnet, you could use that to extract the pellets! :)

Jeff,

I hold the meat up to a bright light and 'sometimes' I can pick out the shadows of shot inside. Then when I go make a pot of gumbo with that same meat I am always surprised at the pellets in the bottom of the pot. I don't know that there is any totally foolproof method except the one you are trying - get the person with the most expensive dental work to take the first few bites. If there is any shot, they will find it. Other than that the best advice is to 'bite light'.

Shooting big shot also helps. It is a much bigger pain to find 6s in early season ducks then it is 2s and BBs in late season birds....and like Pete said "bite light".

I fillet out the breasts, and follow the wound tract and dig out what is readily seen, after cooking I slice thin and occasionally will find one I miss, but bite carefully anyway
