glassing question

I've got a fiberglass marsh layout that needs a little bottom reenforcement. I'm planning on putting a 9 ft. by 38" inc strip of woven 6 oz cloth down which will extend 2 inches to the outside of the 2 molded tracking runners and then two 6 inch strips on those runners. The molded runners are well rounded so the edges shouldn't be a problem. What I need to know, as I've never glassed anything before is- should I but the big strip down first and then the tape, or the reverse. I'm just not comfortable with the flexing and crackleing noises hence the reenforcement. thanks

Eric,
Typically, on a repair (such as a hole), you always put the larger pieces down first, followed by the smaller. That bridges the repair area to bind everything together.

Are you using 6 oz. Mat or just what product? What resin are you using? If epoxy, you will be fine with cloth though that doesn't seem like much reinforcement. If using a Polyester resin, you MUST use some CSM (Chopped Strand Mat) or you will not get a good bond.

Lou's advice is solid and good, but do not forget use the right resin/epoxy. Your boat is likely poly resin and the stuff readily found is poly but you will want and should use a high quality epoxy resin which will assure a good solid long term adhesion. Epoxy resin will stick to poly resin but poly resin will not adhere to epoxy.

Thanks fellas The boat is poly resin. The material I was lookin at was the stuff sold at west marine stores. They have a clth material on a roll sold by the running yard. one roll is 38 inches wide and the other is 6 inches. thats the stuff I was planning to use. Also I was told there that I could'nt put poly over epoxy or epoxy over poly pr it would turn into "peanut Butter" This is incorrect? Thanks so much for all the help.

Eric,

Derek is correct when he states "[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]Epoxy resin will stick to poly resin but poly resin will not adhere to epoxy." On the poly resin boats I've repaired or modified, I've used the poly resin for the repair. Just be sure to scuff and clean the existing surface well.

Thanks for the input guys I have a related question. Will Rhino liner/line x type of products adhere to poly resin fiber glass? Thinking about it for the spot where my pup climbs in and out. anyone try it already?
