Got a question for you NJ hunters....

This year my brother came up to Vt to hunt with me for a long weekend and it looks like he caught the bug. He has a kayak and was mentioning that if were possible to hunt NJ with a kayak that he would like to.

The question he asked me, is what is the law about hunting swamp land in NJ? As a for instance, here in Vt, we can hunt pretty much anywhere we want and we don't need to own/control a certain minimum amount of waterfront land. MD, where I grew up has all sorts of rules about how you need to own/control a certain amount of land in order to put a blind up, etc.

I looked on the NJDEP Fish and Wildlife web site and I didn't see this issue addressed. Or perhaps I was looking in the wrong area. Either way I didn't see any mention of it.

So, NJ hunters is there a web site you can point me to that lays it all out for me? I would also LOVE to hear your experiences in this matter.

John-there is a lot of public land in NJ to duck hunt. Virtually all of the coastal bays are open to hunting, and most of the salt marsh. Inland is a little different, but the state owns a lot of land in the interior also that has some duck hunting. Here is a link to a list and maps of the wildlife management areas. http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/wmaland.htm In addition, pretty much all state forest lands are open to hunting and they are not included in the previous link. What part of the state does he live in? There are tons of places he can get at with a kayak (although I prefer a motor on the back of my boat), and he can definitely have a good time checking out and finding spots to hunt and he can find some good ones. And while I am a sneak box kind of guy, there are some places around where a kayak will be the best way to get access. Feed us some more info on his geography and I know some of us Jersey guys can point him in the right direction.
 
He can check out NJWA.org. It's the NJ waterfowler assocation. They have a forum that he should be able to find a lot of help. They also put on a new waterfowlers clinic every fall. I don't see a date for next year yet, but I believe that it's the 1st weekend in October in Tuckerton.
 
Thanks guys. I cut and pasted both your replys to him in a note. I am going to take a look at the NJWA site for me and see what I can see.

My brother lives in Cherry Hill, hardly prime hunting area, but he has nothing against traveling. I can foresee a trip to NJ in my future, either to the new waterfowlers clinic or with him during season to help him out....

I also told him what a great place this site is and can foresee him joining in the near future.

John-I live next door to him in Moorestown, and he is within an hour of some good hunting in several directions. Maybe we can hook up at some point and I can give him some ideas.
 
I don't mean to hijack the thread but what are the possibilities of a couple of Pa guys coming up there to freelance layout hunt next season? Is it doable for a couple of guys that arent familiar with the area? I'd like to layout for Brant and divers. Lots of layout experience here on the great lakes but not the ocean. Thanks for any help...

yes, its possible however unless you know about tides, wind tendancies and locations to look for brant and divers I wouldnt do it for a few days, when I travel to other places I either pay a guide or hunt with someone with local knowledge IMO you pay one way or another

John:have him get in touch with me in late August and I'll take him out in my boat and show him a few places to hunt in NJ.
I don't hunt as hard as I used to and most of my duck hunting buddies have stopped or moved South
