Got that ram back from the taxidermist.

He's the same guy that wrecked my Harli's and Ge, but I think he did a good job on the sheep. Sheep are his thing for sure. I love it. I look at it and think about how fun it was to hunt with Jud and the boys. We're doing that again for sure.

The sheep has more black hairs in it than I remembered, mostly around the eyes.

Mac wrote an essay for the Fish and Game Association contest. I thought you guys might get a kick out hearing the story from his perspective. I fixed up his spelling and stuff, but the story is his.

My Sheep Hunt
By Mac Prawdzik
Age 9

I went on an amazing fly-in sheep hunt this year with my dad and my friend Marcus and his dad, Jud. I’ve never been sheep hunting before, but I have hunted moose and caribou with my dad since I was 5. When we were flying in Jud spotted 5 rams on a hill. We got in at about 7 p.m. Saturday, 3 days early to do some spotting. We woke up early Sunday morning to do some spotting. We hiked all day and saw 2 ewes and 1 lamb. We also saw 4 rams and we watched them for a while from a little knob. We walked on to the other side of the knob to see if there was anything. Then we saw about 30 ewes and lambs and we looked across to another hill and saw about 60 ewes and lambs with a spotting scope. We sat down for lunch, and watched the sheep. After lunch we walked back to the other side of the knob. When we got to the other side of the knob, Jud and Marcus went way off to another knob and me and my dad went back to camp. When Jud and Marcus got back, they said that there was not 4 rams but there was 14 rams!
Monday the weather was bad but the rams we saw on the way in showed up in the valley we were camped in. The rams came close enough to see with the spotting scope so well that Jud watched them all day. We played cards in the tent. When Jud was watching the sheep he noticed that 3 of the rams were legal, and one was really nice.
Tuesday we got up at about 4:30 a.m. It was a frosty morning and cold and we had to walk up a steep hill. When we got to the top we had a bite to eat. We walked along the top of the hill and saw 4 ptarmigans. When we stopped for lunch Jud spotted 16 ewes and lambs. After lunch Jud spotted 3 ewes and we thought that those ewes might be closest to the rams. We were going to start heading back when my dad looked over an edge and saw sheep way down in the willows. My dad and Jud went closer with the guns. It was the 5 rams and some ewes together! Me and Marcus waited for our dads and we heard a bunch of shooting and Jud came back to say we had a ram down. It was about 10 a.m. opening day. After taking a bunch of pictures and cutting we loaded it into our packs and started back. We were very happy!
When we were coming back Jud found a small, old, sheep horn in the rocks. We filled our water bottles in a creek and were walking along a cliff above the lake, when my dad looked over the cliff and saw two rams. My dad slid down the cliff to try to shoot one of the rams who was lying in the willows by the lake. When he was sneaking through the willows a ptarmigan jumped up and scared my dad. A little storm came in and my dad couldn’t see the sheep until he was really close. He shot it in the neck as it laid there. He said he was only about 10 feet away. We cut it up and went back to camp.
The next day the plane came in and picked us up and flew us home. It was the best hunt ever.
My dad just got the mount back from the taxidermist and put it in the living room, but my mom says there is no way it is going to stay there. I think it looks great. ( I added that last line. )

Cool...pretty cut and dried story there ) Tell Mac I think he should shoot the next one!

I agree with you on the mount...it looks very nice. I don't have much to compare it to. I had a friend shoot a Dall(or stone I guess now that we've been enlightened)about 10 years ago. It was a real monster and frankly I don't think it looked nearly as nice on the wall. Maybe he had it mounted down here so the guy didn't know what they're supposed to look like.

Saweet!! How many hunters will have that hanging on the wall. And a pink wall no less :)

Man! That is a great looking mount. So if you don't get to have it in the living room...tell her it will go over your bed on the wall. Loved your essay Mac, is your dad always scared of birds ?

Looks good and Mac did a good job with his essay. That is still one of the coolest hunts that has been shared here.
Too bad it has all those black hairs. I suppose someday you will have to try to get another one that is pure Dall...or maybe even one more Stone looking. :)

Thanks guys. I think we will try and go again next year, maybe for a Stone or a Fannin, we'll see how it goes.

I did put it over the bed, for about 5 min. I was trying to make her think the living room was a compromise. For the last 6 or 7 years we've had a big bejeezully set of caribou horns over the bed, but since the cabin came along, they, my moose horns, a few stuffed birds and most of my decoy collection has migrated down there. Pretty soon there's going to be Oprah magazines in the shitter I suppose?

Meg wrote an essay too about her "Hunt of a LIfetime". When I get it typed in I'll post it for you guys. Its cute.

Talk to ya later,

Mike

Very nice for sure there thats a wonderful mount. I still have saves that great photo of the 2 kids with the horns on their backs on the big rock. That is by far one of the best photos to date. NOW as far as the wall color all i can think of is this....

Picture a bunch of nice sheep all up in sheep heaven telling the stories when one points down and says hay guys look bobs on a PINK WALL!

At least the wall color compliments the color of his coat :]

Yo Mike, awesome mount. If that guys hosed up your birds, it sure looks as though his niche is big game. Tell Mac I enjoyed his essay.

Wow...
Very nice mount and a cool story to boot. I love it when a great hunt comes together and can be remembered with good story telling. I think we all deserve game rooms so the interior decorators can call them "His Room". I think Parks might be the only one here who could get away with that over the bed.

I can suggest a wall where your ram will reside in peace and your wife will not be subjected to having to view it on a daily basis. The wall I have in mind would be the perfect place for it and it would have the place of honor directly in the center. Don't worry, you could come see it any time you please. I'll even tell you where the spare key is to the side door, in case I'm away from home when you come.

Just trying to help you out with this delimma. hehe ;>)
