Grassed layout boat for Bluebills.

I found a spot that is really sheltered with a good group of bluebills and even though the limit is two I want to give them a shot for old times sake. I have shot hundreds from a boat in open water painted battleship grey with a rigid blind. My question is will they flare from my Wigeon that is grassed in open water. No place to hide boat as they are out in middle of two shorelines that are developed. Curious if anybody has tried this.

Yes. I have shot Broadbill out of a grassboat rigged in the open bay. Like anything else, if you are where they want to be your chances are pretty good.

BTW: Last week I shot my first Broadbill in about 20 years - their speed and beauty are certainly worth the effort.

All the best,

I've hunted them off shallow rocky spits with a small rockblind constructed on the downwind side of my hide, as well as taking birds from my grassed-in TDB in open water. As Steve stated, if you are set-up in The Spot, they will likely be very accomodating.

We shoot divers from boat blinds (or at least we used too, back when we actually had bluebills show up). Never had much trouble getting them to decoy. Put your decoys close to the boat to suck them into range even if they are just passing by.

A lot of guys have been shooting them in grassed boats for years. But if they have been shot at for awhile then you may want to hunt with a boat that hides better.

Yep, did it last week, last year and years before. BB's Redheads and Cans as a matter a fact.

Pat, SSSSH don't tell everyone. LOL

No seriously, Grassing boats works fine unless its something everyone else is doing too. Give it a try you got nothing to loose.

No Tony your right . That boat saved us plenty of times , after the second week when the birds start to wise up it,s just part of what we do now .
