Grassed Up

I acquired a new to me boat this year and sold off my much missed 12' Clem Sutton sneakbox. Here's a bunch of pics taken over the last few months.

Our daughter trying out my old .410. I hope she grows to love this pastime as much as I do!

Well, she is smiling :) I think you've got duck hunter and I love her new boat, hahahaha!

She's a keeper. I've been trying to get her involved in the outdoors as her age allows. We eat wild game often as a family. You should see her eyes light up when she learns that we're having duck for dinner.

Boat looks sweet what kinda grass you using and what color.

It's raffia grass cut down into 16"-20" lengths. I bought 2-10lb boxes of Prarie Grass from Cabelas a few months back when it was on sale. The 2 colors are pretty close in their shade. They are the sand and tan. I wish I went with the sand and brown to give it a little more depth. I'll most likely do a little touch up with flat brown spray paint.

Love the way the boats turning out. You can spray paint the raffie grass to give it a little more color contrast. The tennis ball looked like it was "on" the motor in the first picture and confused me at first...I'm a little slow this morning.

Mike how did you attach the netting to the boat? Great idea.

Thanks, but not my idea. Not sure who 1st came up with it. The netting was bought from Salem Boat Exchange here in SJ. It's aviary netting. They cut me a piece to cover it in 1 shot. Where the two molds were joined together at the water line, I drilled small holes (approx every 10 inches) to weave the tarred decoy line thru. Hunting buddy and fellow member here, Brian Miller, helped me out. We draped the netting over the boat with the flaps up. I walked off the perimeter of the boat at the joining flange of the 2 molds and added extra length to the decoy line so not to run short. Starting at the stern, we made a knot and started to weave. Every time we came up thru the hole and then thru the net, a simple cinch knot was tied to keep it tight as we moved along. After the perimeter was affixed, we turned our attention to the blind doors. I measured the total perimeter of each door and cut another piece of decoy line. Starting in 1 corner, we drilled more small holes around the perimeter of the doors. Again we weaved and cinced as we moved along. To do the bottoms of the doors, Brian climbed in and fed the decoy line back out every other hole. It took 2 guys and a bunch of time to tie it on. We could have used zip ties to attach it, but they can get sharp when cut off and a cut Lab's pad is a bummer mid-season.

Good to hear from you Ken! Somehow, you and Julie made a huge impression on our family. Thanks so much for that. I hope all is well with you and yours'.

My Very Best,
Mike

Nice rig! I have a Carsten's canvasback and I intend to do something similar to your blind. I am interested to know what the flip sides are made of? What would you change about it? THanks!

John this boat is new to me. Our season hasn't opened up yet and I've only taken it on boat rides. So far so good, I am very pleased with this rig, so I as of yet wouldn't change anything. Time will tell. Sorry don't know what the sides are made from other than when they were drilled for the small attachment holes, they smell just like polyurethane resin. Let's see a pic or two of your boat after you get it done.

Roy makes the flaps from laid up fiberglass mat. I'd bet Mikes are similar construction.

I just had some made for my Schellinger high box. They are super light, and pretty tough too.

Man, thats a sweet looking boat! I can't imagine putting a 35hp on it though. I like a little hull on the water when I'm cruising! Did a good job grassing too!

Take care,

Ed L.

Here are some shots of the flaps Roy did for my boat.

Hope this gives you a good idea of what they look like. This last one is the only one I have of hunting with them kind of up. The front flap was down to take the picture of my dad....Dave

Dave,
I notice in one of your picture the metal loop attached to the corner of the flapper board. Is this how you secure the flap down for travel? If so what does it attach to on the other end? Do you use a short length of bungee to attach or something else?

I'm looking for something similar for mine.

Hey Jode...That Harlequin decoy was awesome....If you look at the first picture there is a red bungee running across from one flapper to the other..it is attached to the little black nylon bimini eyes. The kids put the bungee in there when they were playing. But when the side flaps are down for travel, I use what I think are tarp bungess...they are circular in shape with a ball attached. I just run the end through the bimini and back down to where you flip it around the little ball to where I put on nylon step handles..you can see that in the second picture. For the front I put bimini eyes on the top deck and one on the front flap and run a rope through to tie it down. It has worked very well I don't worry about it when driving. I am going to put the flaps on this weekend let me know if you need any more pictures and I will shoot some and post them up. Dave
