gun maintenance question...

I know someone here can answer this question for me…

I was wiping down my Stoeger SXS yesterday and I was using a paper towel soaked with WD40. I noticed the paper towel was really turning rust colored, but yet the surface of the gun barrels did not appear to be rusty at all? I’ve notice this on my Beretta o/u as well.
Is there really that much hidden rust? Is it the bluing coming off? Should I not be using WD40 at all wipe them down initially?

Help.

Thanks in advance for any advice on my query…

Best,
Brian F.

What are you using after wiping with wd-40?? Wd-40 is a pretty good de-greaser and not a very good protector. I like RIG paste as a finish protector on my guns..just looked at my Encore last night..hadn't touched it in two years..or more... and all that was on it was dust..wiped it down with my lambswool impregnated with rig and sat it back in the corner.

Thanks Lee. Is RIG an acronym, or a brand name? Where might I find it, Gander Mtn., or the hardware store?
I use WD 40 for the cleaning only, I use RemOil for the final wipe down.
I wanted to get the WD40 in it quick after I got home yesterday, as it was rather soaked from our cornfield layout yesterday morning, in all that freezing rain and sleet/snow. Now in all fairness that gun has been sitting in the safe for at least 2 years without any attention..... I just could not believe the amount of rust color on the paper towel....

My little white jar just says RIG on it with a bunch of fine print..looks like thick honey. I think they came out with a more intensive gun cleaning product line in the past few years. I have had that little jar for years and keep a piece of lambswool pad with it on it laying by the guns to wipe them if I handle them. My buddies father in law that has the big gun vault makes you put on a pair of jersey gloves that have RIG on them when you enter his vault..right after signing the guest registry...I'm surprised he doesn't make you do a thumbprint next to your name..if I had his guns I would! Google up RIG and see if it pops up.

I believe it stands for Rust Inhibiting Grease. The really fine print on the packaging shows: RIG PRODUCTS, Div. of SELLCO INTL., LTD. SPARKS, NV 89431.

I don't know if that address is still current. Good Luck.

I see in the link I gave that Silencio is the maker or distributor now. What I do when I get a gun is clean it with alcohol to get all (or most) of the old oil or grease off..then I set the metal parts where they will get warm..in front of a heater or use a hair drier..then I wipe on RIG and it melts into everywhere...let cool and buff with an old T shirt or underpants to get excess off. I never have a problem with rust after that.

Lee,
from the link you provided earlier (thanks!) I just order a quart of the RIG. The retailer was out of stock on all the smaller jars/tubes.... must be good stuff... Anyway, I guess all clean all my hand tools, bench tools, and floor tool tables, and lightly coat all of those things with this stuff too. Probably will have enough that Garrett can use this same tub with his kids..... ha!
