hail call: anyone taught boatbuilding in junior high?

Good afternoon, fellas.

If anyone out there has practical experience instructing basic boatbuilding to junior high students, I'd like to chat. I'm thinking of writing a grant for some startup funds and trying it out for a year ('10-'11 year, not this year current year).

My Principal is willing to consider allowing 12 and 13 yr. olds access to power tools and adhesives, provided I can come up with some kind of detailed plan to pitch to our parents.

Things I would like to discuss might include:

lesson plans
cost estimates
fundraisers
sponsorships
related reading

contact the Tuckerton Seaport in Tuckerton, NJ. At least a couple times a year they have a boat building class for kids and their parents. They could probably give you an idea about start up and operating costs, etc.
 
Give them a shout. They do a couple of events just like this at their shows and classes up in Maine.
I know they do the Ply Wood canoe and other simple plans as well as nicer more complex boats.

I bet they would have just the info and help you need for your presentation.

I second the Wooden boat magazine. Go to the forums there have been several threads were some one has had young people build boats. The simplest is a pram. There also was a link to some one who builds boats out of one sheet of plywood. I found that site to be very helpful like this one.
 
I have built 2 kara hummers and 3 uncle johns piroues in my junior high woods class. I have a buddy who use to build piroues with his class and take them up to the boundary waters for a week trip also check out the mtea solar boat regatta. I teach in a well equipped wood shop- kids payed for their supplies. btw I did my student teaching at conrad ball middle school in loveland.

I'll be contacting the NJ folks soon enough, and have sent an email to the wooden boat folks. I'll update if this idea goes anywhere....

Rob- friend of mine worked there for many years, last name: Rickett. I actually interviewed there 8 yrs ago- but went to Poudre instead. you from loveland?
