Has anyone ever had their pictures published?

The Outdoor Edge magazine guys are interested in some of my photos, and I'm probably going to just let them have them for free, but it got me thinking that maybe I could sell a picture or two someday. How does one go about that? What are pictures worth? WHo wouldn't want to have a whole calendar of Meg in her princess dresses? She's even wearing high heels in this one.

I've had lots of pictures published. Mostly in regional magazines but a few times in national magazines. I've been paid twice for it because more often than not I'm doing a friend a favor. The past year I have felt like I should be asking for money. If you don't make a point to ask for recognition, some editors will fail to give you photo credit. One time this year in particular I was snubbed by a national magazine...they published 3 photos of mine with an article and the editor didn't give me photo credit. I guess it's because he knows me and didn't think I'd care but frankly I think it woulda been nice. If nothing else, I think it would be nice as a selling point for other publications. And, admitedly vanity comes into play as well.

I've had a lot of pics published in articles I've edited, co-authored and authored from Michigan Out of Doors to American Shotgunner (prior to their demise). The last article was the feature article in the 100th issue of Waterfowl Magazine (mag. of Waterfowl USA). I was asked to do an article for a friend and asked for no money though I was given a case of magazines as a thankyou. Typically though, we used to get about $150-$250 for articles and whatever you could do as promotion. The promotion got me doing field testing and promotion work for 11 different companies and then......well, I bought a couple of them. :)

YM.

You can buy stock photos for $1 - $50 on the internet.

The internet allows everyone now to "publish" their photos. When pubs are in the market for photos, their mentality is "If not yours, then someone else's" deal. Unless the photos or videos are truly newsworthy (celebs flashing their beavers for ex.) they aren't worth much.

Thanks guys. So I need more beaver shots? OK, when breakup comes I'll be out there. I'll make sure I get credit by putting a digital watermark with my website on it.

Hey Lou... I was watching that Kneck'm Down video and they kept showing off some E Allen OS but kept calling them Clint Taylor's handmade decoys?????? What's the deal?

Knock em down uses our decoys, painted by Clint Taylor. We've supplied a bunch of the dekes and Clint has done all the painting. Clint and his wife are good friends of ours and Clint has been a dealer of ours for several years.
I'll have to talk to them about our "video credit". :)

Mike, I'll have to ask my neighbor about selling pictures. He makes his living doing it. One thing I do know is that he does'nt own a 35mm or take snap shots. I seen his pictures on postcards and on calenders. I have one or two old calenders. Useally there are photografts from several photagraphers. I use to subscribe to a magazine "Outdoor Photographer" in one of the issues they talked about the subject of selling photo's. All I can remember is that there was a doz differnt ways to do it. In some ways the photo is sold out right in other ways they pay for one time use. They also talked about how to protect yourself from being ripped off. I haven't figured how to post a link yet. any way copy and paste. http://www.outdoorphotographer.com
