This used to be a scissor style step from an RV. I actually made something like this years ago for Sara, but she was too old for new tricks in them days and wouldn't use it. Its small, only 16" wide, which I don't like, but for my smaller boat it will fit nicely I think. And I'll brace it to be solid enough for me to stand on so the dog should fee confident on it. Jenny is practically a circus act compared to Sara so I don't think she'll balk at using it if I introduce it to her slowly and with treats. She climbed the spiral staircase at Jane's cabin hoping to find some snacks the other day. That dog has a major eating disorder.

I haven't decided whether the bottom step should be angled or not. If I angle it I could add more length to make it more like a ramp, which might be good until she gets used to it eh?

Nice job Mike.I believe the angle would work slightly better.The dog will use the up edge to push herself up and over.
 
Love the recliner in the shop. Need one of those in my garage! I hear lazy boy has one with a refrigerator in the side.

As far as the lower step and wider im going to say not needed. With gordys he swims up and is able to get his front paws
on the top and then his rear legs on the bottom to boost himself up and in. Without it this was our starting point.

Imagine that in the drink with a duck in mouth. Nothing to hook the feet on. And you would be forced
to grab his head and help.

Gives you an idea of the angle of mine.. If you want I can get measurements of
the platforms for you. I messed with a couple of diffent platforms before getting it to this
size and spacing that works great for Gordy.

4 feet of water and hes is ok on his own. It took him a while to get used to the lower step and to come in
straight at it but after 4 or 5 tries its all normal.

Once you get them using the extra step you will like it. I can keep on takin photos and not have
to worry about him getting back in the boat is so nice.

Great pics, great boat, and as I've said before, great looking Lab! Nice dog ramp too.

I'm looking at duck boats this year. Is that a beavertail? Where did you pick it up at and what do you have motoring it?

Your hole cutting idea sounds interesting Shermie, I might try that.

I went ALL over town the other day searching for a bracket I could use to support this platform to no avail. So I ordered a pair of the stainless steel ones like in the picture way at the top.

I can see already that my boat project this winter is going to be really pricey, so I'm going to buy a few tools like a pipe bender and maybe a bend and break, as well as a good rivet gun to do as much of the decking and stuff myself. I don't want to go so far as getting set up to weld aluminum, that I'll have to pay for, but I can cut most of the pieces myself and go from there.

Seeings as how the only shooting we'll get this long weekend is on Monday, I'm not too upset about not having the ramp ready in time, but we should be in business for next weekend. Diver shooting doesn't get going for a week or two after opener, but the scoters are here right now and moving on.

I have a lock on stand that could be modified to be a dog ramp. If anyone wants it just pay the shipping and I'll give it to you. If you want pics I'll get them on tommorow.

yes she does as a matter of fact makayla and i and daisy was out for a swim the other day at the lake ,makayla thought it was cool to just stop the boat in the middle of the lake throw out the anchor and jump in for a swim ,the ladder didnt quite hold my 250 lbs the screws pulled out but its a small matter of using bolts instead of wood screws to hold on the plywood which i have covered in carpet and 3 -1 inch boards for grip.I think if i add another step it would be a cinch even for me to get in and out..tho with an empty boat id prob flip it on me...good thing my sheila was counter weighting the other side her whole 120 lbs soaking wet lol ...it was close lol

ya if ya cut the hole now it will be there all season in the grass...with us we used the piles of cat tails to make little floating islands to hide in and stand on..and a snooze by times is good too...

I can't see that I'll use the seat part if you want to take that off to save postage. You gotta let me at least TRADE you something for it? How 'bout a small carving for your wife? I make these little fishies out of caribou antler that go on a necklace.

Looks good Phil. I like the way it folds away for transit and storage. And your Chessie has no problems pulling up on it?
