Hey....is anybody "SUGARING" yet?

Ohio is in the southern fringe of sugar country. Sap was flowing here in late Feb/early Mar. Of the few local producers I saw tapped only one caught the main flow. The season ended quickly. The season is fairly erratic here in Ohio. That is one of the things I miss about being a county extension agent in upstate NY. There is nothing like making the roands and visiting all the sugar houses. Everyone wants to share with you so you get lots of little dixie cups of hot syrup!! My wife and daughter think I'm crazy when I tell them about it. It was also nice having lots of access to private land to hunt too!

Little past here. My grandfather in NY usually taps in Feb to be ready for March (he didn't tab this year). In laws in MI were done a few weeks back.

No, but we did find the first good mess of mushrooms this weekend. We found about 30-40 per day Sat. and Sun. Dad had found a half dozen last Thurs. They were mainly the little grey ones but this is a week earlier than we have ever found them before. The week after Easter will be the time in the bottoms around here.

Steve,

I finished up two weeks ago here in MI. We had a warm spell that just shut the trees off...not that I minded all that much being a lazy ass and all.

Any more, with the kids grown and gone, I do it more to avoid it becoming "the year I quit doin' syrup"...19 years running now.

This year, I boiled around 70 gallons to make 6.5 quarts, which in these parts and with my trees is about par.

Nobody eats pancakes around here anymore so maybe I'll work on a Don Julio and Maple syrup recipe

you guys tap trees and get syrup....................................we get turpintine.

the "Sugar Bush"......way more appealing than the "nasty smelling, caustic, sticky, bush", of the Turnpentine flatwoods wouldn't you say?

Steve

Steve,

Passed that time here- we finished up a couple of weeks ago with a decent sap run at the end of the sugaring season. It was pretty warm here, and then froze to butt-cold temps (jan-feb) and the run isn't as good as it was hoped to be. I am not sugaring full-time, but I will be taking a Sugarbush management class next fall/winter at the college I'll be attending. I visited there (Illinois) in February and helped out tapping the trees. Heard some turkeys today- I just don't know how to kill em! (Sit in the woods with me 870 and some #4?)

Could you dip real imitation corn fritters in it? :) Maybe you could auction off a pint or two if you don't use it.

Hey Steve,

We boiled a little sap a couple of weeks back. Hard to find time to do it, but my daughter (5 yrs old) thinks it is fun, so we make time to do it. Good way to use up some of the downed timber around the place (firewood for the makeshift boiler).

Steve,

That's what I like about Massachusetts: you can tell it's spring when they hang the sap buckets on the telephone poles.

If you want some VT maple syrup, I could drive about 3 miles and get you some. Gallon or two?? Give me your debit card #!!!

the boys in vt have had a decent runt this year, its not over yet. for the ones that tapped in feb the good runs have gone by, we've still got all our buckets out and we're waiting to see if the snow storm thats coming tomorrow is going to kill the season for good or if theres one more run in those trees. so far all fancy grade

Sap was running like crazy two days ago. Wish it wasn't such a pain to boil in my homemade setup. One of these days I'll have to make a more efficient rig.

Now we're getting a freak snowstorm...

Not sure what turkey season is going to look like if this keeps up.

turkey season is gonna be fregan awesome with this weather suppressing turkey movement. if it lets up just before may 1st those birds are gonna be looking for hens like crazy. saw 21 behind my house 5 jakes one with a double beard and one 20 pound tom with about a 8 1/2 inch beard, stupid things walked from the woods across the field to about 10 yrds from my pool. turkey hunting from the living room might work this year.

Let me know if you need help getting rid of a couple of those pests. Hate to have turkeys harassing another vermonter... :)

Enjoy the snow!

well i put my 20" wheels back on my 2wd pickup about 2 weeks ago and the racing tread on those 9"wide tires make like skis not so good for steering. i hate this f'n snow the only thing its good for is.......well im gonna have to look deeper for that one until then this sucks!
