How are you guys doing with this storm? I've been reading the reports and my heart sinks just reading about the damage on the North Shore, NH seacoast and southern ME. I hope you guys are doing ok.

Hi Mike,

Things are OK here, just a little soggy. We didn't get any flooding at my place, but some of the lower areas and areas close to the ocean were hit pretty hard. I talked to Hank yesterday and he was watching the tides carefully at his house. The surf was unbelievable yesterday. We had 15-20 swells at the coast and the ocean looked very mad. Made you pucker just to look at it. My wife got some footage on the camcorder that was good. The folks up near Lowell and Lawrence are getting hammered though, and further north as well.

Thanks for checking in.

Best,
Nate

Mike thanks for the concern. We have a mess on Plum Island. A Nor Easter for 4 days now. I have not slept for the last two days. Oter than cat naps. The tides have been incredible. There is an old timer here since 1940 and he has never seen it this high. I have 4 sump pumps now and had 3 running steady last night. Scary when the tide is only 11 feet from the house. I have all my carving and woodworking stuff in the cellar on 6x6 right now. Half the cellar is in the spare bedroom. I'm getting a dumpster as soon as they can drive back on the island. There are houses on the beach front that are in danger of going tonight. The other thing is our camp on Woodbridge Island is still standing but I don't know hwo much damage is out there.

This storm is so bad that the draggers and the Coast Guard could not stay at the moorings or docks. They drove up and down the river just inside the island on the first day. It is impressive when you see waves crashing over the wheelhouse on a 50' dragger.
Thanks for the post and after tonight I think we will be ok. HHG

i am glad to here that everyone is ok. up here along the Nh coast it is crazy. Rye harbor looks like a ghost town all the fishermen pulled there boats to protected areas (before the storm hit). the boat ramp in the harbor got washed out. the tides were so high that it forced the planks on the commercial pier up. they then settled back down as the tide dropped leaving the nails half exposed. the sea wall up and down rt1a is gone. i was able to take a ride along the coast on mon before they shut it down and waves where braking over my truck on the road. no one around here has seen anything like it. i wish you the best

Hope you weathered last nights big tide ok Hank. Nate, I grew up within walking distance of beaver brook in Lowell where the news crews have been reporting from. On a normal day that brook is no wider than your average tidal creek at most.

Glad to hear you are all safe.

Hope all you guys over on the NE coast come through the weather okay. Hate to hear of anyone getting wiped out like some must be over there. Good luck and hang in there.

Thanks guys for the well wishes. We have survived and in much better shape then a lot of the other folks on the coast. At this time I have no lose in the house and shop. Mary, Little Hank and I went to the front of the island yesterday and the damage is incredible. There are homes right on the edge of the dune and ocean right now. Scary stuff. Now that I have all my shop on blocking I think it is ti to paint the walls and cellar floor after it dries out. Does anyone have suggestions on what to use? HHG

I took a ride over to Pigeon Cove in Rockport today and got a look at the ocean from Granite Pier. The lower end of the pier is at least 20 feet above sea level. There was debris all of the road and at the top of the pier as you drive up. There was one side of the pier that was cordoned off with barrels as a 15 foot chunk was gone! The storm picked up a bunch of 3-4 ton granite slabs and pulled them back into the ocean. That was something to see. For the most part, the seas are calm today but the ocean has a brown tinge to it now from all of the junk that was washed into it.

WOW when the water starts taking those granite blocks and tossing them around you know you have more than a rain storm. :) What a storm. Glad it is over. Now the clean up. HHG
