and found one of me back when I was a kid in the Boy Scouts, man does this bring back memories of my youth!

And here's one years later after a deer hunt with my old 1899 Savage. My well dressed hunting partner (Steve Sutton) was using his trusty .30-40 Krag. You'll notice that not only was Steve better dressed, but he also got the bigger buck on that hunt.

And who could forget Bill Wasson's first Maine grouse hunt? Good thing there was a painter there to capture the moment. Obviously it had to be a painter becausue Bill was born long before cameras came into use. :^)

All the facts are true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Dave that first fellow does look familiar.

The second picture The 99 savage just like mine. Had to blow up the picture but the serial number was different. Looks like my first car. Payed 95 dollars for it. It has the same bald tires. The car was two years older than me. Ran it for two years and sold it with bald tires. The fellow who bought ran it for two years and sold it again. Don't know if it had bald tires on it then but probably

The fellow holding on the deer horns looks like an old neighbor of mine. He was strictly a meat hunter. probably saying to himself horns what good are they you can't eat them.

The third picture I won't comment on.

Hi Pete,

I love the old photo's. They bring back a lot of memories to us "old farts". My first car was a 47 Packard I paid $35 for. The tires and tubes were so bad the "air" was showing through! Naw, that is part of a Hank Williams Sr. song.

I'm glad your '99's serial number was different, I'd hate to think that I'd been hunting with your gun instead of mine.

Yep, Bill Wasson looked to have pretty well gotten the "scent" of that Ruffed Grouse, at least I hope that;s all get got, hehe.

Dave, Is that what they called the sporterized version of that Krag? I still have one and am trying to remember what Dad said about the stock being cut down. Mine still has the numbers painted on the stock and appears to have the same length foregrip as the one in the photo.

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric,

Lee's has a good eye, that is the Krag carbine model and does not need to be cut down, but the rifles usually were. But if you have the rifle, don't cut it, as they are now worth a lot more in original shape that after being so-called, sporterized.

Your new boat just about finished now?

Best,

Dave

Thanks for that Dave. I looked up what you and Lee had mentioned. Even though mine has the number decals and cartouche intact the foregrip length is wrong for a carbine (Too short) and the rear sight is gone along with the wood it held in place. I was surprised to see the interest in the Krags. Dad shot a bunch of deer , many grouse, and a moose with this one. Wasn't until he found a medicine buffalo in Montana on an arrowhead dig we were on and traded it for a 30-06 740 Rem that he gave up hunting with it. I pack it as a backup when we go hunting.

Waiting on weather to put the wiring etc. on my boat. It is spending the rest of this winter on the trailer in the yard. I think I will change the paint color somewhat also.
