Thinking of taking the family to the UP towards the end of the summer. We have family in Kazoo and I've always wanted to take a trip up North. Any recommendations on a place to visit? Not to much into the real touristy stuff (maybe a little bit), but would prefer a nice quiet place that might have a cabin and a lake/steams to do some fishing and exploring. Would likely stay a week.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Ryan

If you don't want to go all the way accross the bridge..and like rustic... check out the Rifle River State Game area. My wife and I stayed there several times in one of the cabins..that were on basically your own 100 acre site with lake frontage. It was one of the neatest places we ever stayed at.

No problem! Ryan, I'll email or PM you sometime soon. I'm sure there are other good sources of input here as well.

It's a very special place...that's for sure.

Ryan some nice places to go are pictured rocks, Tahquamenon falls Which has a narrow gauge train and also there are boats that will take you up to the falls. The soo locks are kind of neat. If your going thru my hometown of Manistique stop and see Kitchi-ti-kipi (Big springs) were up to 20,000 gallons of water come up out of the bottom a minute. They have a raft to take you across the spring which is 200ft across and 40 ft deep at a constant 45deg F. and never freezes. The raft is self-operated by a cable. Its near Indian Lake which is the fourth largest lake in the UP. Which has a very nice State park where you can camp in tents or cabins. Indian lake has a max depth of 18ft about 90% is less than 15ft. Game fish include perch, walleye, northerns, muskey, rock bass, smallmouth, bluegill, brown trout and even a sturgeon or 2. Near Manisitque is Seul Choix lighthouse (pronounced Seshwa) purported to be haunted just south of Gulliver. The mouth of Thompson creek and the Manistique river are hot spots for salmon and steelhead fishing in season. West of Manistique is Historic Fayette state park which is an old smelting ghost town. Indian Lake state parks cabins have bunk beds, outdoor grills, fire circles and picnic tables nice sandy beaches. call them at 906-341-2355 I guarantee a nice stay there and Manistique is centrally located with in a few hours of pictured rocks or the soo locks. Indian lake has plenty of ducks too, hunted there this year and there were rafts of pintails, lots of buffies, mallards, geese you name it. Hope that gives you some ideas.

I also forgot about Seney wildlife refuge which is a great place for bird watching and other wildlife. The UP is a great place to vacation enjoy!

I liked camping at Beaver lake east of Munising. Watched a 40' motorhome tear the sattelite dish off the top while he negotiated the steep one lane entry "road". Grand Marais's shipwreck museum is cool and a trip to the Soo Locks is a must if close..Porcupine Mountains...Christmas..(just to mail your cards)...12 mile beach, log slide,etc,etc,etc...and Macinac Island and Fort Macinac ..Tooooo much to see in half a lifetime let alone a week!

Thanks for all the info guys. Certainly have some homework to do to find where we'll want to go. These leads will give me a good start. I've heard from friends in college that did a backpacking trip up there that they loved it and I've wanted to check it out since then. It also seems to be a secluded retreat that offers the outdoorsman plenty to explore.

Ryan if your in to backpacking you might want to plan a trip to Isle Royale Natl park. Its on lake superior near the canadian border. There is a passenger ferry from Houghton and one from Copper harbor. Copper harbor runs from May to Sept and Houghton runs from June to Sept. Very rugged and has a large wolf population among other things. Lots to see in the UP!

Mike, I think you will like a week in the UP. It is a whole different world up there. There is a lot to see and do. Not your usual tourist trap. I worked with a lot of people from the UP over the years and always enjoyed them. They never considered themselves as part of Mich. and always as a separate entity "Yoopers" and took pride in it. Often the phase "The other side of the Bridge" was how they referred to Michigan. So far you don't need a visa to cross ta bridge :) )

Wispete I was born and raised in the UP. Never thought of being part of Lower Michigan, Flatlanders and appleknockers, or trolls, you know living below the bridge. he he he he Guess thats why I have always been a Packers fan. Greenbay is a lot closer than Detroit. My dad use to have as a front plate on his car "State of Superior" with an outline of the UP. Yes it is a wonderful place and great people. We all have fun with people from below the bridge and they make fun of yoopers. Its all in good fun. I think everyone should try and go there and enjoy some of the beauty God has blessed the UP with.
