Been a longtime since my last post but i wanted to ask a quetion regarding my 6 year old Lab , she was diagnosed with Lyme last year and has been on 2 volleys of medication , the probelm is that she still has a tough time moving around after a good workout, granted she is a little over weight ( we are working on this issue ) but she limps until she loosens up a little , is there anything that you guys use to combat stiffness or soreness in your dogs ? The Vet tells me she will have sore joints for sometime . Not sure how to handle thiis this year

Thank you guys in advance

Unfortunately lyme disease and anaplasmosis seems to be a yearly event with my two labs. I appears that in many cases the dogs are under dosed by the vet and never get over it. If you check out Tick List or some of the other web sites you will find the suggested dosage of doxycycline is 10 mg per lb of body weight per day. Dosage is normally split with 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening for a minimum of 21 days. Some experts recommend up to 8 weeks. When I moved to this area my dog came up lame and the first vet put him on Doxy for two weeks - needless to say the dog never got over it. About a year later the second vet got the dosage right and we treated for 28 days and got over it.

IMO the first thing I would do is make the current regime is correct.

With two reasonably fit 9 year old dogs I find canine aspirin works quite well. I also just picked up some Rimadyl for this fall. Rimadyl is basically Naproxane for dogs. It will be my first experience with the drug but it has performed very well for my friends dogs.

Dave, last year Chili began to show some signs of limping and it took her a while like you described before she got loose. Bev bought a product called Dasuquin (for joints) and she responded to it well.

For older dog joint lubrication, try glucosamine from cvs. It's essentially dasaquin, but cheaper. It works great for hip issues. I started mine on dasaquine per vet instructions, then switched over to glucosamine. Your dog seems a bit young to be needing it.

Regaring Lyme, there are now lyme vaccines for dogs.
