Longline reel system

It's been a while since I've posted over here - hope everyone's doing well.

Over at the MLB site, I wrote up an article about how to make a reel system for longlining decoys - my partner and I made this thing last year, and we use it all the time. It works great. I thought y'all would be interested in seeing it.

Check it out:

Enjoy!

Good to "see" you, Sean!
I've often wondered if a layout rig would work on the Texas bays.
Might get run over by the fishing guides....

If you're ever back down here, I'll take you out on a prairie duck hunt. No long lines req'd.

My mom & dad are sometime "snowbirds", and he keeps telling me I need to come down and visit them sometime to duck hunt around Corpus. He says there are tons of redheads. It sounds like a great idea, except that it's so far away that I'd pretty much have to fly, and I don't think I can check my layout boat!

wel me son thank you first off for seeing a dream i had one nite on how to make my life easier when i hunt alone outa 14ft boat and i was thinking garden hose reel but on how to accomodate it was another dream i was gonna have to have thanks for the help, next question do you always put out one side and do you mount it there or in the middle on the seat.?i love macgyverin things .

Sean,

Really cool idea! Andrew and i went out seaducking a few weeks back and we had the MEGA KNOT OF THE CENTURY!!! It was my fault i left 200 feet of tarred crab line coiled up with out a spool ! Went out great came in as a HUGE KNOT! I built a plywood board today so it would fit in the shelf of my cackler without the bulkiness of the spool , i am not sure if it will work but i will try it . The next best thing is your idea, Thanks for posting it

Shermie -

Normally we either use this from the shore (where no seat pole is required), or in my partner's boat. He's got a 21' jon boat with three seats in a row across the back. He sits in the right hand seat and drives, and sets up the pole in the left hand seat with this rig. Then I clip decoys to the line while he alternates between driving and helping me pull line off the spool. So yes, we always do it off the port side.

thanks man i realy love the tips folks leave around here, and this will be made in the off season,i just took an hour of my break time at work and went to the shop with a discarded chair the thin metal type with the semi foam vynl padded seat and backrest this a ridget one non collapsable type and with a little heat and and hacksaw and a piece of scrap plywood and a little paint job i now have a boat ramp for my dawg Daisy.ill post a pic if any one is interested in my macgyverin.

also now looking at it it will double as a layout seat in the bottom of the boat..

fertile minds grow grand ideas one never knows what or how great an idea will be.

now mind you it doesnt pivot and collapse but it will do " it will do"
