He's in the pile somewhere... Our oldest son William is naming the new AWS "Yankee" as there are only 4 breeds of dogs that are considered truly American and the AWS is one of those breeds.

Can't wait.Pennyandpups.jpg

Just a warning from one AWS owner to another. 95% of the people you encounter are going to think your dog is a poodle. And before you get around to explaining what an AWS is, they'll be thinking that Yankee is short for "Yankee Poodle."

And you probably aren't planning to take him hunting in Alabama some day, are you?

Seriously, you're really going to enjoy that pup. Training can be a challenge since they tend to be smarter than their owners. I know mine is.

A couple of weeks ago my wife complained that Mickey needed a bath. So I said, "Okay, I'll give him a bath right now." I looked around, no dog. Went upstairs to the bathroom and there he was. Sitting in the tub. And he hates getting a bath!

Hah Rick, I never thought of the politically correct angle... I hope my friends down south forgive me ; ) A friend of mine in Alabama had an English pointer named "Rebel". Rebel was an awesome quail dog.

I'm going to train this dog right. I've been doing a lot of reading up on this breed and evidently they are super smart, super tough ("pain" training is not the program with these dogs not that that's my program anyway). Mini Chessies is how some people think of them. But, we're not going for blue ribbons, above all, this dog is a family dog, a hunter second.

I am still trying to figure out the dog's limitations esp. duck hunting. There is a lot of literature re upland, but not much re duck hunting. It's not mill ponds we hunt, it's the salt water bay and there are usually waves and it is usually cold. I don't bring my lab if it's colder than 10 degrees, and I won't bring her if the wind is ridiculous (i.e. big waves).

Inevitably I'll be posting a lot about the dog's progress. He'll be ready for next season.

That's a very funny story about Mickey.

Best, A.

Andrew,

Congrats on the new pup! I am sure that everyone in the family will be thrilled with the new aquisition when he comes home. You will be happy with one of Gerda and Bill's pups. I might have to take the kids down to visit the litter here after the holidays.

Hi Nick,

I'd love to meet up with you one day to get the lowdown on the AWS. I work in Troy, getting to your neck of the woods is easy. Perhaps we could meet for a beer or coffee one of these days.

Gerda is great, obviously that couple is very professional and take the dogs & breed very seriously.

Talk to you soon.

Andrew

Jay,

I forgot that you had a camera. That must be from our last morning on Pool 9.

BTW, Mickey's been suffering from PDSD (post duck season depression). I need to get him out after some pheasants this weekend. (I've been trying to teach him how to ice fish, but he has trouble casting into those little holes.)
