Going to be up on business soon and wanted to know the must eat/drink places. Was told The Old Fashioned is a must as well. Thanks in advance.

Hi John. You'll have fun in Madison. A great college town. It's well worth taking a stroll up and down State Street. A good place for people watching and you'll get a nice view of the capitol. If you like burgers and beer you've gotta stop in at the Nitty Gritty. A hot spot that used to be owned by a good friend of mine, now retired. It has a unique history and there's always a fun crowd. Here's the link:http://www.thegritty.com/ Plenty of other places, but this will get you started. Enjoy. Jim

Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Mn. are my favorite winter cities. I always make a point of stopping by The Church Key.

As others have already mentioned State Street has the best college town vibe. Just make sure to dress for dry COLD winter weather...

John,

While an Old Fashion is a classic, I don't see many people drinking them any more. There are a number of very good micro brewers in the city. If the day is nice you could go to the west side to Capitol Brewery and sample a number of beers, though they don't have food. Best to plead ignorance and have your hosts take you to their favorite place(s).

I just saw this on MSN as the best burger joint in the state (arguable of course) http://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddrink/foodnews/the-best-burger-in-every-state/ss-AA8whNI#image=51. Never eaten there myself nor do I even know where it's located.

Good luck.

L'Etoile was always excellent food, prix fixe (= beaucoup bucks). I'm not sure how it is anymore, so I'd check reviews, but they did exceptional food when we were there. Local/seasonal fare, French-inspired.

Supper clubs in WI are fun and would be where to find an old fashioned IMO - if you are going with a work group that would be good. There are some fun bluegill or perch fries too (sometimes at supper clubs). I don't have a suggestion, though.

My stops are/would be:
Essen Haus for a boot(s) of beer, depending on how well you know your group
Ellis Deli for a hot fudge sundae on grilled pound cake
Babcock Hall for a strawberry malt
Dotty Dumpling's Dowery for the hamburger
Parthenon's for a gyros. Zorbas is across the street, pick one and always go to that one, you can't switch.
There is/was a pool hall just off State Street, which is probably my favorite in the state, mainly because I won several tournaments there, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name
What are you coming to Madison for?
