Mahogany Side Clamp Question

After seeing how good my mahogany side clamps look next to my Parker's duck boat green paint job, I was thinking about not painting them after putting on my deck. Any words of wisdom as to how to treat them if if don't sheath them in fiberglass cloth and epoxy? I was also thinking about leaving my grass rails unpainted too.

Your thoughts?

I would use some kind of oil. Varnish will peel after a while. To renew vanish you will need to sand off the old stuff. With oil you can simple keep adding coats every year.

Sikkens Cetol or a couple of initial coats of epoxy, blocked and sanded, with up to 6-12 coats of a traditional spar varnish....I would recommend Epihanes Gloss Clear Varnish or Pettits Flagship. As noted varnish need to be sanded before applying new coats - as a rule polyurethane needs to be stripped and traditional spar only need a nice block sand with 200-400 and a couple more coats. Stick with the traditional type spars for easier repair.

The varnish is glossy ---- not good for huntin quackers.... as in ducks...
