Most of my jobs have been Outdoors, plus hunting and fishing in cold and ice, I wore gloves, or went bare handed. Now I am at "Grumpy Old Men" age, (and Gawd forbid) considering even going Ice Fishing with some guys who have much experience at it. I have Never been a mittens guy so.....

Any, and all input from members would be much appreciated, along with the ribbing I'll know doubt take.

You need a pair with a string that runs up the sleeve of your jacket, down and out the other sleeve and attaching to the second mitten

Hello Vince,

a lot of guys I know for hunting and fishing are going to the two handed muffs with a zippo hand warmer inside. Keeps hands toasty I guess.

I've typically gone for the "chopper" style mit, either lined with pile or the traditional leather with a wool slip in liner. You can still have some style.

Depending on your ice fishing, mittens are not very functional while on, hence the uptick in muff use. The loose style of the chopper makes them so you can "drop" them one handed. No teeth or anything to get them on or off. The choppers come in many types of leather or leather persuasion fabrics.

Good luck. http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/Field-N'-Forest-Men's-Full-Grain-Chopper-Mitt---Black/0000000037783?utm_source=googleps&utm_medium=shopping%2Bsearch&utm_campaign=google%2Bproduct%20search&gslfah&gclid=CI78guey4LsCFa4-Mgod7W0AOA

Vince, I can't work in gloves, but also can't work with cold fingers! I use a muff with the disposible hand warmers, and some "Mom-made" half gloves. Mom gets real wool sweaters at the Goodwill and shrinks them in the washer.... then cuts them out and sews me up a glove with no fingers, just a thumb hole that is also opened on the end. They stretch out during the hunt but just go in the wash after each hunt to get the snot out of them and to shrink them back up snug. I have not tried the butane handwarmers, as I was always afraid the smell would be an issue deer hunting? Anyone have experience with the smell?

Vince,

I swear by my Aqua-Fowl mittens! I ordered them in XXL so I could wear a pair of fingerless gloves under them for shooting. Birds come in, I slip of the mitten and shoot without the extra gloving in the way. The size also affords me extra room for a hot hands..yet to get cold enough to use them. I'm supposing it will tomorrow. However, I did have them freeze SOLID on me while I was paddling my kayak back to the ramp Tuesday morning. They were solid ice, and my hands were WARM!!!

They're on sale now...

Ice fishing is like handling decoys--your hands will get wet. I wear Glacier Gloves neoprenes for both, and put on a warmer mitten when I know my hands can stay dry.

Jeff,

My hunting buddy swears by his Glacier Gloves....However, I cut through mine pulling decoys on the very first day I used mine. Maybe I don't know how to pull decoy lines, but they were cut and began to leak day one.

That being said...they are a great pair of gloves.

Check out military surplus shooting mittens with the thumb and trigger finger. You can buy wool inner mittens to go with them. Sadly, no over the shoulder string attachment to keep you from orphaning them. I have found them on ebay for around $15.

I am a leather chopper with wool liner guy. I don't get cold hands very often so when I get the choppers out it really is cold!!. I like the way I can loose them just with a flick of the wrist and be bare handed. Don't have the string hooking them together yet but the day is coming I suppose. Second choice for me is fingerless wool gloves, I like them with leather palms. Good luck and stay on top of the ice.

Dave I do the same thing with the wool sweaters from the thrift store. I line them with heavy fleece. They are the warmest I have. I make sure they are 100 percent wool then wash the sweaters in hot water and dry in a hot dryer before cutting out the pattern. I guess this is called felting and it makes the wool weave tight. I use the cuff of the sleeve for the mitten ends. Theres a lot of tutorials on this on youtube . I had them on today while shoveling the driveway. Bob

I got these for Christmas, and I love 'em. Again I don't have to deal with the very cold temps ya'll have up north, but my hands are actually hot wearing these. I wear a size 8 1/2 glove and I got the 2XL and they fit just right. They are not waterproof, but they still seems to be warm after they get a little damp, which is unavoidable the way I hunt ducks.

I don't ice fish much anymore but I'm with Tom, horse hide choppers with wool liners were always the ticket. I do wear fingerless, thermax lined wool gloves most of the time until it gets below zero and then the choppers come out.

Yeah, durablity is not a strong point--especially abrasion resistance. You have to be careful with them--but this is less of an issue handling ice lines than decoy cord. But they are still warm after they start to leak a little. I prefer them to the rubber "lobsterman" gloves, but most of my hunting buddies go the other way.

I made my whole family a set of beaver mittens. Ya can't go wrong with beaver fur...those are some warm mittens!

Gentlemen, one and all

I very much appreciate your suggestions and advice. I knew I would get good responses from the members here. It looks like I'll be getting more than one pair, and a hand muff as well. I have always been a big fan of the disposable hand warmers, but as a long time PA guy, Zippo is a iconic USA brand. This is good, as now I can add mittens & more to my vast array of hats, gloves etc. Stuff we need to be "Out There", where we belong.

Chuck - How long is it gonna take for you to knit me a pair of those Red & White stringers? I'll wear em while walking our dog Fred. I'm already thought of as "the nutz artist from PencilTucky". Might as well keep folks talkin'......

Thanks again fellas

ok Vince - now that you have a real answer -

ICE FISHING ?? having grown up around the Finger Lakes I have to say that the only practical ice fishing I ever saw was my father's method.

go down to the basement - get the auger and the tip-ups - out the lower door and make the holes and set up

then go back in and sit in the easy chair and watch out the window for the flags to come up

however - this may be the right winter to take up the sport
