I've been running a 25 hp 3cyl oil injection Evinrude outboard for the last ten years on my fishing boat and I don't have much to complain about. Only twice have I had problems on the water and both times it turned out to the the fuel line clip O ring letting air in the line or not pressurizing. So now I carry a spare fuel line and spare clips. It's real good on gas compared to the old 70's 40hp Johnson that I used to have.

Colin,

I've talked with the boat mechanic at my office about etecs in the passed and he had nothing but good things to say about them (40hp, 50hp, 70hp). Seeing that they are state equipment and treated as such... that says a lot about there durability. I have heard of one bad experience from a waterfowler that had one on his 17 TDB, I guess it really didn't like to wake up in the cold. Who knows, could have been one bad one off the line. Your best bet is to walk around this spring at the local marina and talk with the guys that are running them.

All that being said, you should take a look at a real work horse... Oldest outboard manufacture in existance. They build for many companies other than themselves. I have 18 hours on this one and man I love it so far.

i looked into the tohatsu bu they are no longer making the motor you have. they did make a new 40 hp but will not ship you have t pick up in TN. i an seriously looking at a yahama but the width of the cowling concerns me. i think a two stroke will fit between the sponsons of the scaup better thyen the four. i was also looking at the etec for the size and all reports i have heard have been good. i trust other hunters info and experences.
thanks for all your help

Ya, actually I had forgotten about the shipping thing, I don't think anyone will ship a fuel injected outboard for what ever reason. I actually got lucky and was able to find and purchased the second to last two stroke carb tohatsu left in the U.S., only weeks to spare before the new federal law was passed. Tell you what... your a friend, good deal for you.... just through break in period, I'll sell it to you for 8,000 )

No matter what you end up with, its somewhat of a crap shoot. Just be sure to make the purchase after you can honestly tell yourself that you did all the homework you could have in making a decision. Oh and don't forget the oars )

well i dont know much about outboards but i worked at a boat dealership in 05 up here in vt that sold etecs and i see that you've heard good things but one thing that happened with the first bunch of etecs we had was they vibrated like hell now the ones we had that did this i dont think were forties but it took us some time with the computers and evinrude tech support to re-program them not to shake so bad. but i would think with the new ones that problem would be solved.

I run A yamaha 25 on my jon boat, always starts first pull in the summer and 2 to 3 pulls in the late fall when it's about 32 to 35 degrees F. Its a 1994 and nothing went on it yet exept the fuel line o rings.
