It was the first day of hunting in the mountains of Colorado. I got a non-resident deer tag for a zone that I had been scouting all summer, while working at a youth summer camp in Colorado. I knew some big bucks were in the area, as well as a ton of elk. Well, the scouting paid off, and I saw this guy my first day out... except he was with a bunch of does and a younger 4x4- on private land. So, I admired him through my binoculars, and told myself I would take him if I ever saw him again, on the property I was hunting on. Well, later that evening, after talking to another hunter, who said there were no deer around- I saw this buck stand up at 115 yards through the trees and scrub. He hadn't noticed me yet, so I crept closer about 15 feet. The shot was there, and I dropped him dead in his tracks with a .30-.06 I had my first deer! He was much bigger up close. We estimated his live weight at about 300 pounds, and the taxidermist told me his rack would score around 180. My friend took a buck too, and we had a good elk hunt also. Now I want to go duck hunting! But I don't expect to shoot a banded bird... =)

Congrats on the Muley Chris, you got a real dandy there. What kind of altitude were you hunting? Did you run into snow?

Pete

That is a great mule deer. I hope you know that you will likely spend the rest of your deer hunting days attempting to find one that will be better than that fella right there. Enjoy it, savor it, it might not happen again.

Chris,
Congrats. What a buck. Enjoy the memories and savor the thoughts. Lots of us here would like a chance at that big boy.

WOW thats a nice one, I can't wait I leave for Co on the 31st I got buck and a bull tag.............. hope my buck is close too the toad you got......

Damn fine muley you've got there.

Nothing finer than doing the work, and harvesting a great deer like that.

Congrats.

let's see that's 2 whitetails @ 150 lbs. Now that's puttting meat on the table and furniture on the wall! Great job man, the scouting paid off.

Well, Chris..........you did it! Now you don't ever have to mule deer hunt again, you most likely have killed the largest mule deer of your life on the first day of yoru first mule deer hunt.

All you have forward to do now is shoot a Royal elk and you can get back to duck hunting again. Luck was certainly with you. Lots of people mule deer hunt all theirlives without a shot at such a high-wide and long-tined buck as the one you took. Fine job!

Dave

Congratulations. Like Dave said, you could hunt Muleys the rest of your life and not shoot one finer than that.A great trophy for sure.

Great trophy deer. How was the elk hunt, I took a nice bull a few years back with a bow. Mountain hunts are some of the best trips I have had in my life.
