Mushroom identification

Was cutting up a hickory yesterday and found some mushrooms on a dead section. Looking at my mushroom book the only thing I see that seems to fit its profile is an oyster mushroom but want to see what some of y'all say.
It's a decent size with the singles measuring up to 5" across

Ben,

NOPE, NOPE, NOPE Not an Oyster mushroom. I did not take the time to identify what it IS but it is definitely NOT an Oyster.

Bottom side should look like this to be an Oyster mushroom. (Top side is wrong color variation as well.)

Agreed. Not an oyster. There aren?t many that will hurt you but I don?t put anything in my mouth if I don?t know what it is. Down here oysters are always on wood but almost always poplar or a maple.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't see in my book where it said oysters had the gills but I probably just overlooked it.

I definitely won't mess with mushrooms without positive ID because like you said Carl, some are edible at least and only once.

After digging through google some more, this is the closest thing I've seen to it but not a lot of info on this species, seems mostly a Europe type mushroom.
"trametes suaveolens"

Ya got that right Carl.

Prior to my retirement, the long time "mushroom expert", that worked at another store made a terrible mistake. His dad, grandfather, and himself (all experts) landed in the hospital for awhile.

Never heard much about his mushroom hunting exploits after that.
