my new ride part 2

Have finally got enough done to give it a go today and see how everything could work trying to use a restored 1991 TBD as a layout boat. I added slicks to the trailer........these things rock -

The prior owner, Mark added some nice interior red lights which I took down for paint and then reinstalled. In most cases I used west system in the hull to glue mounting blocks for various items like battery box, extinguisher, and gas tank hold downs -

The boat tows really nice and launches and retrieves off our beach without too much heavy lifting provided I have a foot of water -

I am rethinking the camo and may end up going to a synthetic in bundles for better coverage and to stop at the height of the gunnels. Since this craft sits higher than my old BBSB and since our native grass if going fast, I may want to lower the profile a little -

I know one thing for sure............before Monday I am ordering a new seat with some padding from the Momarsh guys. I built a small deck forward and have a backrest that I think I will add some grass to so it is up behind my head -

All things considered, it was a good first trip and I will get out much earlier on the tide next time. When the tide is high in the marsh, you can't hardly hide a surfboard. Had to make about a 2 mile run over deep water with some waves..........no problemo.......and the little yami 8 works fine with just one guy onboard........not as sneaky as the BBSB but I think with better camo and lower water, this will work and then I can also scoot out a little to photo some eiders which I moght try tomorrow if the big wind eases up. Anyway nice to be back in the game !

Sarge,

That boat looks awesome! Kind of reminiscent of a WWII tank camo job - I love it. Good luck and safe hunting.

That is one very nice looking boat, Sarge. Looks like you have a very nice area in which to hunt.

That is a great set up.

I am considering some cedar boughs and doug fir too and black zipties to the grassing rail
... .should be able to get plenty of both after christmas right out on the curbside.

The boat looks great, and you sure right mate there is plenty of room in it, I would get a single bed in there and go to sleep and wait for the incoming tide to float me HeHeHe.

Take care and God Bless

Very nice, I was thinking of adding netting to the front of my TDB also. Can you get a close up of how you attached the netting to the boat. I was thinking about drilling holes to attach tie downs.

Dick you did a real nice job; the paint, the grass and the new slick style bunks. Can't wait to see the photos of it in action starting next week.
Best of luck - Paul

Thanks Dave, compared to the BBSB I have gunned out of for many years it feels like an ocean liner !

Hi Al - We have a good sized marsh protected by a long barrier island. Some of it is off limits to hunting and serves as a refuge on the island side. When the millions of spots in the woods with water freeze up, more ducks and geese move out to the salt. I'm lucky to live so near to this area.

Hey Todd - I think whatever matches your area is a good idea but keep the weight in mind......really adds up !

Eddie - The one thing you have to be careful with, with this hull is running out of water. It'll float in less than a foot but you do not want to have to try to move it off a mud bank or you would need a bed to wait for the next tide !

Hi Dean - That is a small section of black baseball netting that I got from Memphis net and Twine thanks to Robert up in Vt. I have enough to do the whole hull and may redo with a synthetic at some point when I can get the stuff I need. I ran 1 x 1 1/2 " strips of the plastic recycled "royal" plank. It comes in 18' lengths 3 x 1 which I had cut to 9 ' and then ripped to 1 1/2 ".........this is bolted to the outside top edge of each side gunnel....it's flexible enough to follow the contour without breaking and then I just painted it before attaching etc.

If you need more info just send a PM

Hey Paul - Hope you have been doing your "crunches" and that the BBSB is working well for you. Let me know if you want to come out in Jan. for a hunt. I am likely going to change a few things up after using the TDB for the season but I think this is a good move for me. Best part is that I am less likely to fall out !

Looked like you had a great hunt back in Oct. - way to go !

Hey Dick looking great. One thing that I will warn you about. The slick pads on the trailer. I used to own a 14 TDB just like that about 1993 and I used the slick pads and found that the pad started to cause wear on the gelcoat on the bottom of the boat. I loved the slick pad and it made it really easy to trailer at the ramp but I removed them when I saw the amount of wear on the boat. Just a heads up and they could be different technology now then it was then. Great job and good luck on the marsh. I'm starting to see some ducks around now but we need more cold weather. Talk to you soon. Hank

Hi Hank - Thanks for that info. I am planning to try to flip the hull over next spring/summer and paint the underside of the hull and will look for any wear. Most of my trips are only a few miles to our marsh here but I do take a run down to Westport or Barnstable a few times. I have no idea how I will flip it for prep and paint............not sure if it could take being rolled on a side and then over or if I will need to jury rig a rope to 1/2 of the stern over a tree and then lift one side..........I think it weighs around 300 so I want to be careful !
Hope you have a good season>
Dick
