NDR-first archery deer

I got my first archery deer Friday night. I have been bow hunting off and on for a couple years now. But with a decent private spot this year I'd figure I'd take it a little more serious. It is right near work so I'm able to get out for a couple hours afterwork. Last week was the duck split so I didn't feel guilty leaving the pup at home and heading to a try stand. I had two does come in around 5:45 and and was able to get a shot at them around 6:30. I took the first one that presented itself. Shot was at about 15 yards and qaurtering toward me. Trail was less then 50 yards. Put the arrrow through both lungs and the aorta. She was one of the fatest deers I've ever butchered.

She's not the largest but she'll be tasty and tender.

Way to go, Pat. That is a great way to get started. What are the rules with the bow in WI? Can you shoot a buck now if you want to?

Thanks guys for all the kind words. Had some back straps tonight sauteed with some onions, garlic and green pepers in a little olive oil and left over red wine. Bridgett approved to the point where more hunting will be "premitted" :)

Al- It all depends on where you are, that determines what the rules are. In south central WI they tested positive for CWD a few years ago and they realized the herd was a little large. So you can shoot almost as many deer as you want. You can get doe tags for like $3 and can "earn a buck" for every doe you shoot. With a normal bow tag you get a buck tag and a doe tag for any area and then two or three extra tags for the "herd control/earn a buck" units. With your gun tag you get just a Buck tag for any unit plus doe tags for the "herd control/earn a buck" units. A couple years a go over the half the state was "herd control" (could shoot a doe and buy etra doe tags) or "earn a buck" where you HAD TO shoot a doe before you could shot a buck. But the DNR has cut back on that in most areas besides the CWD areas where you can still shot unlimited deer. That is a little confusing, I know, and it changes every year.

On a side note. I thought I got my "Earn a buck tag" when I registored my deer. This was the first time I have shot a deer in the CWD zone so the whole process is new to me. I thought something was odd so I asked my students and showed them the tag I got from the teller. Turns out its only a doe tag. Granted I don't know if I need another buck tag but if it were to screw me out of the buck of a life time I'd be a little pissed. I even went back to the gas station. They dug through all the registration forms from the weekend and couldn't find mine. The manager at the time blamed the dopey kid that was working and wondered where it went.
