I have an invite to join my brother-in-law for a deep sea fishing trip. My brother-in-law owns a business which supply building and repair products to the boating industry in the area and this would be a trip hosted by one of his customers. Thats all I know at this point.

He has asked me when I'd like to come. I'd like to come when the fishing is GOOD, duh! hehe I've done the "head boat" thing before and also a charter boat with just my wife and myself but this has always been a side trip to already being in the area for other business. Just happened to not be prime time for fishing at the time.

Getting back to this trip, I'm not to fussy about what I catch but would like to see a little action for my efforts. What time frame should I request for what species of fish? Looking for several suggestions as I'm not sure just what time frames may be available.

Thanks in adavance for you help.

Coming to my playground are you?

Are you talking Chesapeake Bay fishing? or Offshore Bluewater fishing?

In the Chesapeake out "trophy" season starts on April 15th and you'll catch big rockfish....aka Stiped Bass....aka Stripers...by trolling with Umbrella lures or big bucktails. The fish are here to spawn. Something like 70% of the Atlantic Stripers spawn in the Chesapeake. The limits have not been set yet, but rumor has it the quota will be very small this year. I could personally care less about eating the big ones....the small ones are better for eating.

The summer brings us smaller fish that can be chased with light tackle or chummed at anchor. The water conditions can vary a good bit and can bring better or worse conditions. Bluefish, Rockfish, Croaker, Spot, Perch, etc...depending where in the Bay you fish.

The Fall is similar to the spring, with big fish returning to eat the bait that spawned with them in the spring and has now grown up. It can vary from north to south and water temps are a big player in success.

OFFSHORE....

Ocean City is MD's lone inlet for offshore fishing. There's also Indian River in De. Chincoteague and Wachapreague in VA. Virginia Beach has a few inlets and the Carolinas are a good bet too.

NC is the closest fishing to the coast, and is the best IMO. Tuna from March-May thent he Mahi and Marlin show up with a mix of tuna and wahoo. Wahoo get thick in the fall and the tuna come back through.

OC, IRI, CHin, WACH-

Tuna come from the south and usually heat up by early June. Nearshore Bluefishing can be a blast, wrecks for seabass, tog, and tilefish can be great.

Mahi, Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo can be caught through most of the summer. The techniques go from chunking to trolling and cary with conditions. Most runs offshore are 40-80 miles.

I can recommend a few boats if this is what you all have in mind.

Also check out sportfishermen.com...you'll find a numer of boats and with the search page you'll find a TON of information as well as reports from past years.

Give me a holler if you need specifics pr anymore info.

Well gee Dave, I don't know. I checked your profile and there is no location listed. Whats the matter can't remember where you live???? BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I do appreciate the info and I may just well be asking you for more. My wife's sister and her husband live in Virginia Beach. One of his customers is hosting the trip, presumably on his (the customers) boat. I've just been invited to tag along. I think it may be (read hoping) off shore. If everything falls into place and I head that direction, I'll get in touch with you. It would be nice to meet face to face.

Thanks again.

Dave I live in Ellicott City, MD. Between Balt and DC just west of 95.

I'm 4+ hours from VA beach.

The fishing around the CBBT Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is great. Va. Beach has a long run to the offshore fishing grounds, but it can be great if the weather and water temps work out when you're here.

Dave:

From what I can interpret from your post, "deep sea fishing" means ocean fishing. There are many factors, the time of year, water temp., and areas fished (canyons, buoys, coast line, structures, wrecks, ect.) will increase the your chances of catching certain types of fish. Personally, the end of July though August is my favorite. Tuna, marlin, dolphin, wahoo sharks, ect. can be caught off shore. The weather can make or break a trip but runs into the bay become an option if the off shore grounds become too rough. In that case strippers, cobia, drum, flounder, crokers, ect. can make for a good day.

Dave, if you check my profile you will see I don't usually post but what you won't see is that I occasionally contact people off line to offer advice.

I have been lurking on this site for at least 6 years and am finally getting comfortable enough to put my .02c worth in.
If you like leave me a message and I give you my # if you have any more questions.

Hope this helps

Did you mention the Spadefish ? IMO the hardest fighting (for their size) and one of the best eating fish there is. 4 fish limit in Va. but they are usually good sized for Spades in the Chesapeake.

Best,
Harry

July or August. Largest number of options and the run to blue water is usually shorter. Getting into september you start flirting with frequent tropical storms. We have caught mahi as close in as the ches tower in august. -J
