Nope, not about the situation in the Middle East, or about mass shootings here.

This is about pizza. Good old American (ok, Neaplolitan-American) pizza.\

There is a new pizza place that just opened in my town. I was on my way past it today at lunchtime and figured I'd grab a slice for lunch. It's just opened, they have a snazzy sign, and there is a pretty good crowd, so I wait in line for about 5 minutes to get to the counter.

When I get there, the young man behind the counter asks: "Have you been here before?"

"Nope," I replied, expecting to get a quick primer in the wood oven I could see and their daily specials.

Instead, he tells me, "Just to let you know, we only take debit or credit cards."

I assumed this meant they did not take checks, and had left my debit card at home by accident, so I said, "Well, cash is still ok, right?"

"Nope. We don't take cash."

Is this even legal? Isn't a business required to accept legal tender in exchange for goods and services?

I was so pissed I took my business elsewhere.

Has anyone else heard of businesses doing this?

Cash is king! Unless you have gold.

Should have offered them gold and seen what happened.

Carl, you have just given me an idea for a state law to push for. In the meantime, I may organize a boycott and picketing campaign.

I own a business, and I'd rather take only credit/debit... Sad but the problems with payments are always because of cash, but mainly check.
CC /debit it's instant, yes, or no.

Then why do I have stores that require a minimum purchase for debit sales, and some that charge me extra if I use debit? I always assumed this was because the debit/credit company is charging the business a fee, right?

I get that checks are a PITA, but why not deal with cash?

Businesses get a cc fee from the cc companies. Most businesses pass it along to consumer (2-3%). Checks suck... Cash sucks because it requires action. Taking it to the bank, counting it etc.. Seems small, but why do it when I can instantly verify, and have it in my bank account.
Not to mention in a retail setting such as a pizza place, cash customers take time, you could check out 2x the cc customers vs cash customers.

No cash on sight for robbery etc, just a ton of benefits of cc vs cash. Especially in a retail setting... Cash still has it's places though!

I would think a 2-3% margin improvement for taking only cash would be valuable to a place like a pizza joint.

You will find more of this in the future. Harder for employees to skim and you don't have to worry about being robbed.

Just pass er along to the consumer... Raise prices 2-3%, no one notices.

I have no problem with that and can see lots of benefits. I'd happily never use cash again.

Just think what a pain the world will be when the only currency is 22LR (and I only have a brick to my name).

I knew you were too young to be an old fart. You're probably not rich, either.

Unless there is a pizza place across the street that accepts cash and can charge less for the same thing.

And you are incorrect, people do notice. Many folks have issues with charging everything so they cut up their cards. There goes some more customers. Some people can't get credit cards, or don't want credit cards. There goes some more of that customer base. Some folks like Jeff won't frequent a business with this policy, there goes more. Pretty soon there won't be enough customers for this pizza joint to worry about and the issue becomes a non issue.....

Young at heart - some days, anyway, some days not so much. My back doesn't feel young today.

I dislike cash, having to count it and carry it, etc... Plastic is better in every way.

I'm disappointed in you Tod. Cash rules! In your honor I'll put out a plastic rig tomorrow, complete with a spinner. LOL!!

Yeah, I have days like that.

If you run a pizza place that has walk in traffic and is open longer hours into the night the elimination of cash on site dramatically reduces the risk of robbery. This is both a business risk from a cash flow perspective but also a physical, psychological and emotional risk for staff and customers. Put yourself in their shoes. Not having to protect themselves from junkies and crack heads looking for cash for their next fix may be their motivation.

Debit is a preferred tender due to very low cost per transaction. You use the same device used for credit cards but instead of giving up a percent or three to the CC company you give up only a few cents per transaction. There is no trip to bank, no counting cash, and
no counterfeit bills to account for.

The problem is that most people working the register these days don't know how to make change. Pretty pathetic. Owner probably figured that he would loose more money due to mistakes if his employees took cash and tried to make change.
