Need some suggestions...

My wife and I will be celebrating 20 years of marriage this spring. Last week she asked me…”Can we go someplace special, somewhere tropical for our anniversary?” Well it didn’t take long to see 20 years of duck boats and fishing boats, guns, tackle trips to where I wanted to go flash before my eyes. How could I say NO? Soooooo I said “Hey how about Mexico?” Do you know the first words out of her mouth were “Is it still duck season down there?” That nixed that idea. I didn’t know she paid that much attention to me.

So we’re booked in the Sandals resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica the last week in March. My question is, at the risk of being left in Jamaica, has anyone been there that can offer any fishing suggestions?

Thanks,

Ed L.

Fishing in Jamaica is pretty much limited to offshore boat fishing. The inshore waters have had so much pressure from the locals for so many years that they don't have much left. Offshore on the other hand can be good for marlin from what I understand. There is a significant ocean trench between Jamaica and Cuba that has good marlin numbers at certain times of the year. There was a large marlin tournement held every year north of Montego Bay (can't remember the town but it was north of Ocho Rios as well).

My advice is to dote on your wife for a week and forget about fishing UNLESS she wants to try deep sea fishing and then only on a day when you can guarantee she won't get sea sick. Also, see if Sandals has any snorkel trips. Though the amount of fish life won't be what it is in a marine park, it still is a whole lot better than fresh water. Also, if you ever thought of trying scuba diving, most resorts offer a brief "Resort Course" for $60-75 and will take you on a dive or two - fully chaparoned.

There will be plenty to do to keep you occupied for a week if you need to be. But, really, it's OK to just relax for a week.

Have fun.

but then having said that its obvious that thats the whole intent...at least for the male side of "Anniversary trips".....

I'd go wtih Pete on this one....Anniversaries are for the ladies and they like their guys to be thinking about them, the last however many years, and the next ETERNITY and not about how they can be off doing stuff that is more enjoyable to them than sitting with the wifey on the beach.....not a bad thing mind you given that you only do these typesof trips one in a very special great while...

So I'm with Pete on this one....enjoy the time with your wife....do what she wants to do...don't worry about what you might be missing and concentrate on what the positives of being the wife's own personal "cabana boy" will be while you're there, and for years afterwards.....

AND...get yourself some wrap around mirrored sunglasses so she can't see your bugged out eyes staring at the little hard bodies playing volleyball in front of you on the beach.

Pete and Steve,

Thanks. Sound advice indeed. She does deserve some pampering. Snorkeling is on the agenda but I tried scuba years ago and could not get past the panic attacks once I was deeper than I knew I could re-surface with out oxygen.

Lee,

That did cross my mind. My wife did say I was allowed to take a guitar with me. My thought was I could hide my embarrassment as well as save myself a black eye if those little hard bodies just HAD to play in the sand in front of me...;-) Being an "old fart" does'nt constitute death and after all we are going to be there during spring break!

Hey Man,
You married a keeper. Just the fact that she was keeping up with your Duck season says volumes about her desirability. Do whatever she wants to do as you will be building up green stamps big time.

Congrats and Best Wishes,
Harry
