Neoprene Dog Vest

The one that fits, silly!! Sonny, i have always had good luck with the ones in Cabela's catalogs. Don't know whether i like the velcro or the zipper better. They both have drawbacks. Things might be a bit simpler, now that we are bringing a SMALLER lab along!

Thanks George. How is the training going. Seeing any new ducks. Hunted yesterday and did not see much. Gabby needs a new vest and I was not that pleased with the Avery. That's why the question.

Avery fits my dog the best out of the package so that's what she wears. I really liked the wide Velcro on the Cabelas vest but neither vest I got from them was cut to the sizes posted on their website.

Ok guys, which brand do you guys think are the best.

I bought the Cabelas 5mm that's on sale but have yet to fight her down to get it on so I can't tell you how it fits.

I just got the Cabelas 5mm, and it fit pretty good on my GWP. For the best possible fit, run the pup and vest down to the local upolstery shop for a tailoring. They usually get a kick out of it and its pretty cheap.

Sort of an open ended reply on my part but I think it depends on what dog you are putting it on. For my last two dogs who where, and are very oily I ended up with a camo version of a small Gortex horse blanket that after they are out of the water and a shaken off most of the water I threw it over their head and back. Both dogs ended up staying much warmer than with the neoprene because they were not contending with the evaporating water that was trap in a traditional vest.

I came upon this by accident when we hunted a day that was in the single digits and the vest was freezing up. I pulled it off the dog and but my gortex shell over the dog, hood and all. She stayed warm as toast the rest of the hunt and that night I ordered her the horse/dog blanket thing and never put a vest on her again, except as protection from sticks early season in the beaver ponds.

Like us all dogs or different but it wouldn't hurt to try both and see which works better for your hunting partner. On a side note I think George W.'s old dog is big enough for a regular horse coat.

NONE. I am 100000% opposed to them. Prone to snagging and if you have a true water dog, their coat is perfect! Just five them a spot to dry off.

We are on our second vest. The first was from Cabelas. It was ok but did not fit correctly in spots on our small lab, 55-60 lbs. Then my son tried to pull her into the boat and tore around a leg. I was able to patch it for remainder of the year. But we bought her one from Avery and it fits much better and has a handle to help her into the boat if needed.

I agree with Phil . . . I don't think the vest is a wise choice for most Lab type dogs. It is better to let them dry off naturally, or in the coldest weather, bring a towel to dry them after a retrieve. I hunt with friends that use dog vests, but I think my dog is better off not wearing one . . .

My 2 cents.

Sonny, Eddie Kershaw sent me a sonnd that he was not using any more--Kind of like the blankets that race horses wear. The only reason for a vest is to help maintain core temp on really COLD days. Kind of like why we wear layers!
