It has been a busy couple weeks around here. We drove out to WI to pick up a new pup and have been enjoying all the wonder and challenges that come with having a new pup.

Beaver with Skeet today.

He rode for about half the thousand miles home on the center console of the F250. The other half in Gus' lap.

It hasn't been all puppy dooty lately, we have been able to get out and live a little. Here is Gus' buck from the other day.

You're in for some great times with that pup Tod! Beaver looks like a perfect name for him. Congrats to Gus on his deer too, that muzzle brake on his rifle looks about like it would set your hair on fire!

Congrats! I like the name. Nice looking pup. No mischievous look in his eyes at all. Hahaha

Congrats to Gus also. Nice buck.

Tim

Tod, seems like your letting Gus do all the killing this year. That's a fantastic looking deer! And great looking pup, I also agree that Beaver is a great name.

Well I hope Tod is also adhering to the rule; You shoot'em, you drag'em. [w00t]

Great stuff all around Tod. With Pearl approaching 9yo the thoughts of another come in and out from time to time. Looking forward to seeing Beaver grow up. Congratulations to Gus on the buck!

Thanks Cody. I'll pass along the message to Gus.

I have a love/hate relationship with that brake for sure, but as a tool that works so well to be able to have a kid able to shoot as well as he does makes toting muffs around worth it. The ports are 90 degrees to the side rather than angled back, so there is no blast for the shooter, but out to the side is a different story! We always take a far bench at the range to keep from bothering other shooters. That .308 is a soft shooter with the brake for sure and it is a killer given his elk and deer this year!

Thanks Troy, I've had enough pups to know better, but I was somewhat unprepared for a little one. My mistake partly for getting one during hunting season. I can't believe Pearl is 9, Skeet turns 10 next month. He is in good shape for 10 and will hunt out this season, but given his downhill trajectory, I'd think he won't be in shape to hunt next fall.

Thanks Dave! he lets me help drag them ;). Actually, this deer was shot so deep on the backside of the mountain and so far from the truck, we called for reinforcements and Jen came out to help and the 3 of us skidded it out.

Here we are looking manly while Jen takes a breather.

Best of luck with the pup. Like the name.

We struggled with the name Beaver given the connotation, but I'm glad we went with it. We made the decision to put money down on the litter while we were camped in the town of Beaver, Utah. Given their aquatic nature, brown furry coat and likely propensity to eat wood (and all the subtle potential beaver jokes), we decided to go with it! Say "Beaver, Beaver Duck Retriever" and not love it. :).

Nope not mischievous at all. ;). They all are little evil beasts at that age if they are going to turn out to be great, so we are happy. He is a good pup and taking to training well along with having great style.

I'll pass along the congratulations to Gus.

It is funny, last year, I was under a lot of pressure to get the freezer full early so I could keep the season light and give Gus the absolute best opportunity to have some good low pressure hunts and really enjoy himself without either one of us having to shoot anything. This season with his elk and buck, I can take it easy now!

Who is Beaver out of again?

Thanks Phil, I'll be lucky if he is half as handsome and has half the ability as Otter! He is from the Curly x Scout litter.

Grand Oaks Hes No Boy Scout is Beaver's grand sire, "Scout" (Redbranch Scout's Honor) is his mother.
