New Foamer/Burlap Prototypes

Here are a couple of new prototype foamers I have been working on.
1st one is more of a full profile body style. 1x6 pine bottom board with foam upper. I rounded this one more than the first decoys I did.
Decoy blank from the 1st ones I did for reference, kinda boxy:

New prototype with bottom board, more rounded, "bob-tail style". Head is not attached yet.

Here is a "flattie Foamer". I still used a 1x6 pine bottom board but made the profile much flatter. I can get 3 times as many decoys out of my foam by doing this. And I have lots of scrap 1x6 pine laying around.
Has a GE head on it for now, but this is just for the pic, it will be a hen buffie or redhead.

Some other commented in anotherr thread that they had used AC Plywood for bottom boards. How has that worked out? I have a ton of scrap plywood.

thanks for posting the updates.

The one thing I'd want to avoid, whenever possible, would be a bottom board, so I'd be interested to see how the plain burlapped ones without the bottom board hold up as compared to the bottom boarded models.

My objections to bottom boards? they are another step in cutting, another step in gluing on, and additional cost in terms of the glue. They do give you something firm to anchor the head to, something firm to anchor a decoy line connection to, and a bit of protection to the foam.

You could achieve the anchor connection by running a dowel through from the head, and screwing the anchor connection to that.

I like the more bobtail style you came up with for the bottom boarded models. They look great. I have had bad luck with any plywood, even with waterproof glue, put below the waterline with the laminations/layers as an exposed edge. Since you are wrapping the decoy in burlap over glue/mastic, I assume the plywood edge will be sealed in glue, burlap, and paint over that..............so, I'd think plywood would be okay..........

If you ever want some patterns for bobtails, let me know. Came up with a few last summer that work really nicely.

Carl:

I am really diggin your "foam flatties". My son and I just a MLB super mag and are starting to build a diver rig. Never carved before but I am currently working on a dozen foam bluebills but really like the look and simplicity of what you are doing. I have decided when I finish up the ones I am carving now I am going to do a rig to resemble your flatties. Couple of questions?? Do you plan to put a keel on the flatties? If so what do you plan to use. Secondly will you burlap the flatties and if so will you cover the bottom board with burlap? Also are you sealing the bottom board with anything other than Kilz? Oh and have you decided how you'll attach the head and line yet?

Here is a shot of the rig I am working on now. Half way thru the carving process.

Thanks,

DW.

Do you plan to put a keel on the flatties?
Yes, I will use Azec trim board scraps for keels

Secondly willyou burlap the flatties and if so will you cover the bottom board with burlap?
Yes on both.

Also are you sealing the bottom board with anything other than Kilz?
Nope, just burlapping.

Oh and have you decided how you'll attach the head and line yet?
Heads will get a 3.5 deck screw from the bottom board up. Lines get attacehd to the keel.
