another pic- the molded in seats- its like a lounge chair- there are two shelves inside- and a size 12 boot- no problem- you have room to move your legs- and can stand - this is a well made layout-

Glad to see that you will be taking that boat out of retirement. Sure looks like it will be plenty stable. It looks like its in really good condition too. Great find!

its mint!!! it had a dead raccoon in it- i do not think it was ever used!!!

I am taking it to my camp in tommorow- its super stable- and when i am in it- its so flat on the water- and its comy- like a lounge chair- not cramped- i have been in alot of layout boats and this boat is a cadillac of them all-

Nice find Don........where do you come up with these deals!!!? Of course, I'm jealous! I am fortunate that a Classic works well for me, but unfortunately not for all of my team. I have a couple of pals that can't 'fit' in the Classic (at least comfortably!).

Lucky- i guess- i am always on the look out for classic boats- and this is a sweet heart- roomy- and stable- i can even row it- know were do you see a layout boat like this?

options galore-

Donald That is what I was looking to build this summer. There is a similar layout in a book I have in my collection. any photos of it with a hunter in it? Does he still making them?

i do not- i can get you some- No he is not making them anymore the molds are gone- they burned- he made these in the 70s-
if you want to make one- come up and do it-

BURST INTO FLAMES?

That must put the number of molds that have been destroyed by fire that I've heard of over the years into double digits..not trying to question you on this Donald so don't take offense. It just seems that there are an inordinant number of molds that have been lost to fire. Are they like Tornado's and Trailer Parks?

Neat looking boat...like a big fat kayak.....

Here's another question for you...the other day you posted a photo f a boat that you said was a Merrymeeting float....in the picture it looked like it had a schooner stern like a Whitney boat...never seen one like that...was that something unique to that boat or was it something that was done back then but not now what has become a "standard" Merrymeeting Float?

Steve

Steve- I know- Bill perrys mold burned- and Pete Witham sold his scull boat and layout mold and they burned- i have no idea- The MMB flao- is that the one with Randy Dow in it- it is a standard- upper bay float- not a schooner stern- if thats the pic- I may be wrong-

this Layout it cool- its low and wide- safe and roomy- i went to see it today as its tide to the town dock- and the wasa drake whistler standing on the aft deck- i took off as I came by the dock-

DLHO-

Come off to this coast and try her out this season-

sure looks like I'm seeing daylight under the stern nd not the squared off stern I'm used to seeing on the Meerymeeting boats....

Steve

Steve- I think its the angle of the pic and the grass- Randy never had Whitney float- and Whitney was the only one to make a counter stern-

Donald

also a GOOD float has alot of lift in the stern- and that flaot does- i know were the float is and have sculled it- the new MMB style glass boats do not have that- and the are slower than a dirt train- Whitney took that idea to the extreme-

its a square stern MMB float made in the 1920s-

Donald- i have another pic i will post same day- but the pic is from another float behind randy- and there is a big floack of geese he is closing in on- and it also show the nice lift in the stern-

that boat is what the original Merrymeeting boats looked like....as compared to what I'm used to seeing which would be the similar, but different, Merrymeeting boat...

Steve

ya- something like that-

The MMB float in the 1950s- 1960s changed- to a duck boat with a sculling hole- the early floats were made for sculling- lots of lift in the stern- narrower- then the advent of the outboard- relabilty- made hunters want to motor out- and set decoys- SO_ the float was flattened out- the lift removed and it was made wider- a duck boat-

then the glass floats came along- and the made mold of what the had- the later floats- so - the new floats do not have the scull ability the old ones did- i have sculled the glass MMB and they drag aweful- they do not track at all- and they blow of course in breeze- The old floats- ones made to move by oars- are a whole different animal- even now of the bay - the floats are motored or poled- very few sculling the floats- and i do not blame them as the floats well- are tough to scull-
Make sense?

there is no MMB float in glass made today that works like it should- under scull oar power- as a duck boat- great can not beat it-

Both of my daughters, when in their teenage years, had the habit of saying; " They (what ever item was being discussed) are exactly the same, except" blah, blah, blah, listing a whole series of what was different.

I would always ask my daughters, What part of "exactly the same" don't you understand?
