Any comments on the Tohatsu/nissan/mercury 3.5 outboard? I am coonsidering on a getting a new one for my displacement scull boat.

Not with a 3.5 but i have gotten 10 years of great service out of my Nissan 18 with no reapiars and little maintainance.

I have one as a kicker for my snowgoose. I don't use it much (thankfully), but it has always started easily and I think it woudl be a great motor for a scull.

I've had one close to 10 years now. I like the weight and having neutral and it's been reliable although when I got it it took a while to warm up before taking a load. It doesn't require that long warm up any more. Two drawbacks I've had with the motor: With the stock composite prop and brass shear pins, the pins popped with any contact. A real PIA after dark in less than calm water. Popped two one night on the way back to the ramp off Norwalk on LI Sound. Next day started looking to upgrade. Bought a Nissan aluminum prop and now use the matching S.S. pins. Much happier! Second issue, my fault I guess, left the motor hanging on the back of the float in the summer. After a few years the internal poly gas tank split. Now I know to store the motor inside away from temperature extremes. What happened to metal tanks?

I would buy another but would immediately get the aluminum prop and SS pins.

I'll second the composite prop problem. Mine didn't shear the pin cleanly. It bent over and cut a groove on the inside of the hub, which made it nearly impossible to remove the prop. I fought with it in the dark and finally gave up and poled home. Good to know that a metal one is available. I'm going to order one. Other than that I'm happy with mine.

Stainless shear pins, never heard of them but doesn't that defeat the purpose? Or are they "special" stainless ie soft? After Saturday the temptation is high to put in a "non" shear pin.

Tom,

SS pins are what the manual calls for with the aluminum prop. They must to be relatively soft to function but significantly harder than the brass which shears to protect plastic. If the brass is a 45-50K tensile the SS could be 65-70 K tensile and work well.

Well now Tom, if you have many more days like you did Saturday you'll need to order a whole mess of those "non" shear pins! What I can't figure is that I never hit anything while following in your wake. What's up with that?

Sorry I jumped the thread, but I couldn't resist. Sounds like the Nissan 3.5 is a good motor.
