NOOOOOOO Booker NOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yup, you guessed it. Booker learned not to play with black and white wild kitties. He and Charlie were goofing off during the "no Fly" afternoon of the opener and I was half dozing in the sun. When I whistled them in and they didn't come I went looking for them. I saw Booker pushing his face through the grass about the same time I caught the smell. I had some Remington Skunk soap in the dog bag and I have to say it worked really well. He was able to sleep in the camper with me that night. Still a whiff now and then but not the horror staory I have heard. I think the swim immediatly helped to wash the stink off. I am afraid his collar and vest may never be the same though.
Oh yeah I had the best opener in years and years as far as ducks seen and even shot.

Dogs are like teenagers - when they get bored they get into trouble. Good to hear you had a fun opener!

You’re lucky. My Golden was sprayed about 3 months ago. After trying the numerous concoctions found on the web and from talking to other folks who had their dog sprayed, the only thing that worked was time. He was sprayed directly in the face/chest area. He got sprayed and then ran across his electric fence line so he got zapped in the process. When I got to him he was rolling in the grass foaming at the mouth. He ended up getting hot spots on his neck and face from the irritation. A trip to the vet for meds and a hundred odd bucks later fixed the hot spots. Every time he has gotten wet, the smell returns. It has gotten better, but still lingering. Its code in the house that when he stinks we say he smells “like roses.” The wife thinks telling him he stinks hurts his feelings.

Don't you hate when that happens. My last chessie killed a skunk in the neighbors yard the night before season opened one year!! I've never heard of the Remington Skunk Soap before but will check it out.

Knock on wood, Otto hasn't shown interest in skunks and he is almost nine so 'maybe' I can get through at least one dog without dealing with it. The last twelve haven't been so lucky.......................well, maybe not all twelve, but a goodly share of them.

You mean you are going to make me guess as to what you saw and what you shot? You mean to say that you don't even have a tail gate shot of your ducks and Booker? Did you hunt in the Clinton area?

Glad the odor came out easily.

Whenever I hear Cassie bark at night I'm fearful there is a skunk in the backyard. That was not a good experience.

Tom,

I hear tell that old mountain men were able to skin a skunk alive, with out the smell bothering them, either. 'Course the mountain men were a little rank themselves. :>) :>)

This has been the worst year ever (last 25yrs anyway) in our neighborhood. Marsh has been nailed twice, once out next to a corn field at the end of the road and again less than a month later in our yard. Now it's dark when I walk him in the AM but in the summer, in the half light I'd see one or more on about 50% of our walks. In the dark it's worse, cause even though I can't see them, I know they're out there.

Anybody have a good way of clearing them out of the neighborhood?

Scott

Don't know if it is practical in the neighborhood, but we had a real bad problem at a scout camp we went to each summer.... they were so bold that they would walk between your legs while you sat around the fire at night. Of course we did not move a muscle or make a sound when they were that close!!! This went on for 2 years. The 3rd year I bought 2 quarts of fox urine at the farm store. When we arrived at camp, I walked a perimeter around our site some 40 yards away from the tents, and every 10ft or so I squirted a little from the bottle. For 4 nights, no issues, then it rained... the skunks were back the next day!

I have heard you can trap them with a small havahart cage, then drop the cage in a trashcan of water. I have no personal experience there, but have read that they can't spray without planting back legs and lifting tail. I wonder if when they die and the muscles relax if they release the scent glands though... maybe in the water it is diluted?

Dave,

A well placed 22 cal. bullet will kill a skunk with out the skunk releasing their scent. While there may be some residual odor present, the sent bag will not release its contents after the skunk is dead. If when skinning a skunk, the scent bag gets punctured, then all bets are off!! Holy buckets that can be a strong smell in the closed confines of a garage. Don't ask how I know this. :>)

Dave,

Do tell, what is the magical spot to shoot them were they won't spray? From a lot of my own personal experience, including a shotgun at close range that a head shot is 100% guaranteed to get a spray reaction. I have heard that the only place to put a .22 is in the stomach/liver so they die slow and then won't spray. Personally, that has only worked occasionally and then only when I used a .22 short or CB. Have you ever tried the syringe in the chest that the old trappers mags were touting 20 yrs. ago? I heard that it worked well but never tried it myself.

Oh, I know very well what happens when you puncture the scent gland when skinning it - I think my knife and old Mac coat are still out by that tree. Any idea the mean things high school kids say when you come to school smelling like that? Not endearing whispers!!

I have way more skunk stories than I ever wanted.

Al, No, no tailgate shots but they all were divers. Redheads, ringbills and a rudy. That may not sound like much but my first redhead ever was pretty cool. From Clinton west 3 iles and north three miles. Now I supose I'll haveto fight off all the internet hunters.;-). Seriously it was a better opener that predicted and somewhat spotty. And then !!! my pictures are in the never never land of almost downloaded!!!!!. Most were just dogs and landscape pics and I never seem to be able to get them from camera to here anyhow so I have almost given up. I guess I'm just stupid. Today I talked to students and other hunters that did well all over the state so that is a huge ray of hope for the rest of the season. One highlight from Sat was I motored over to see how some other hunters were doing and they had lost one in the grass. These were a couple young teenagers who had been doing some skybusting but at least they were out there and not in front of a TV. So I asked if I cold bring the dogs up to look for it. Well they went to it like on a string and really made an impression on these two kids. I can only hope they decide to keep hunting and get a retriever. I did my part.

Pete,

Maybe I have just been lucky but I always tried to shoot then in the lungs using a solid bullet that would pass right thru without a lot of shock. If the skunk wasn't already agitated and I didn't hit a shoulder bone, most times the skunk would just lay down and die.

Some times it didn't matter because the skunk had already spayed down a ten foot circle around the trap anyways.

The one I nicked while skinning in the garage hadn't sprayed and if I hadn't been in such a hurry all would have been well. It was a nice young fur and a very nice white stripe. I had checked and pulled my traps that morning just immediately prior to my scheduled departure to Arizona for three weeks. I wanted the hide for a vest I planned to make and was in too big of a hurry. I got the job done in spite of the smell, put the fresh hide in the freezer. The wife, my two daughters and I jumped in the car and off we went to Arizona. Meanwhile I had completely forgotten about the carcass which was still laying on the floor of my garage.

By the time we returned three weeks later, the smell had subsided. However,,,,,,,,,,, the next door neighbor related that the days following my departure there must have been a skunk hanging around because they were always smelling it but never saw it. I just kept mum about the source. :>)

A friend of mine bought a pickup load of whole skunks and was skining them out when he poked the sac. Bad enough but it sprayed him square in the eye. He passed out oin the yard before he could get to the house. His truck stunk as long as he had it!! I been lucky til now. I got check by a warden Sun and he remarked how there were so many skunk around and then he bent over to pet Booker. Surprize!!!

I have heard you can trap them with a small havahart cage, then drop the cage in a trashcan of water.

I call that "giving them swimming lessons"...done it with coons plenty, but not sure on the skunks releasing. If you cover the trap (without them being alarmed and spraying) they will not spray in a confined area. My dad shot one with a 22 through a trap, without it releasing, but that may have been just lucky.

Dave, Pete, what the heck are you guys skinning skunks for? Did you loose a bet? There isn't enough money in any pelt for me to skin a skunk...

Chuck,

I wanted a vest. Beaver pelt for the back panel and twins skunk skins for the front panels. Never did get it done but that was the plan.

So if you walked into a room with the vest on, everyone would assume that the odor that came with you was due to the vest?

I have neighbor who likes unspayed and unneutered cats. Every spring and fall we have many new little kittens running around. I bought a Havahart cage to trap them my neighbor on the other side of the street is in charge three shelters and she would take them to the shelter for me. Problem that I had is that I would occasionally trap a skunk. If you leave the bait in for more than a day or you are guaranteed to get a skunk or a possum and we get a lot of skunks in our area. Cute little things, just wish that they didn't have the stench.

Local trapper wants $75 everytime to come pick up my cage and get rid of it. My wife applyed for the job and I said no way since I sleep next to you. I have since purchased from the nite-light company a skunk trap. It is a piece of pvc piping about 10 inches in diameter and 30= inches long and it seals shut(not air tight). I am told that the skunks cannot lift their tail and therefore cannot spray. Has a carry handle so if you would like to transport to a more friendly enviroment for them.
