Off season

Hi hey guys, I was wondering what you guys do with your duck boat engines on the off season. I have a new 25hp yamaha with a 2 year warranty so I was thinking of using it during the summer too. Any suggestions on a type of boat I should put it on? Something that can get into the flats?

Thanks
Dan

why not use it on your duckboat? More time in the boat will gain valuable experience. I like to push the envelope some in the summer when the penelty is not as high... was out in some whitecaps and serious boat chop surfing some waves with the sneakbox...just looking to see the limits.

My boat does not have an off-season, it has been run 12 months out of the year some years.
I use it to fish from late February/March until Thanksgiving and then its duck season from then until the last Sunday of January.
So no off season for me or my motor.

I plan to use my sneakbox this summer for fishing and I used it last fall before duck season opened to fish the back marshes for stripers. I get some funny looks by others boats but its fun.

I took the sneakbox, with grassing still on the dodger out on Memorial Day weekend.... took a ride just to get out with 1000s of my fellow Northern Virginia and Maryland boaters! Took a ride up past Mount Vernon and past the beautiful people on their big boats... I am sure I was the smallest boat out there in my 12fter! I got more questions and interest than anyone else...thats for sure. Folks wanted to know what I was hunting now...me in my shorts and t-shirt and sunglasses!

I also have a 25hp Yamaha and have been thinking of finding a 13ft Boston Whaler for fishing on the flats. The 25hp would push the whaler pretty good, plus it would also fit perfectly on my duckboat trailer. Just put the duckboat on blocks for the summer, swicth the motor and you are all set....

Where are you from on LI? I live in Ridge and hunt all over the island, especially out in the Hamptons.

you wont be dissapointed with a little whaler. My 13 has a 9.9 I imagine a 25 will push it real nice.. Some guys round here have 40hp on the little whalers,, must get squirrelly with all that power.
Anyway with a tiller extension you can stand towards front of the boat and cruise through inches..finding an old whaler is half the fun, happy hunting

I hunt mainly out of Amityville and Babylon. This is my first year with my own boat but I hunt with a good friend of mine a lot. Yeah thats what I was thinking, a 13 foot whaler or some type of skiff to get back into the bays and get some crabs and clams. I have a 23' center console so I use that to fish.

search craigslist, there are always 13 whalers on there.... the key is to find a cheap one!

You can spot the cheap one.... it is the one with flattened tires because of the waterlogged foam inside the hull. Be sure to check on the deal before you bring it home.
