Old Duck Boat

While perusing thru some old pics, I came across these.

This 'ole boat hung in a late, dear friend's, local Orvis sporting goods store, in Rootstown, in NE Ohio. A fella on here named Tom, (darned if i can remember his last name, but he's from Michigan), showed interest in purchasing the boat in the upcoming, going out of business auction. As I recall, Tom's interest in the boat was due to him being somewhat of a collector who wanted to open a little duckboat museum someday. Especially of boats from the Michigan area. Well, as it turned out, I volunteered to be his surrogate in the auction. We agreed on a ceiling price, he sent me a check, and as luck would have it, I was the winning bid.

Since this is s Duckboat site, and the best site on the net, I may add, I thought I'd share here. Enjoy!

Sweet boat. Odd it was noted to be made in Dowigac MI, not renound for making duck boats that I am aware (about 45 minutes south of me) but resembles an east side of the big mitten boat and notes assisted by Chris Smith (Chriscraft) who is typically associated with the east side too.

Either way, cool boat!

Good morning, Jon~

What a wonderful vessel! It's great so see all of the details.

Question: Did these boats typically have floorboards? or were they bare-soled like most canoes?

All the best,

SJS

Jon -

Congratulations on the winning bid, and thanks for the post.

As much as it is a joy to look at, it sure would be wonderful to hunt out of. With a rig of Michigan decoys, and a old "Shootgun", of course.

According to BUILDING CHRIS-CRAFT by Anthony Mollica with Chris Smith. The duck boats (of various kinds) were first offered for sale in 1874. A special duck boar kit introduced in 1953. Could be his influence went far and wide, over many years, due to high quality of boats and decoys produced.

Best regards

Hi Jon,

I saw your post on the Duck Boat that was hanging in the Orvis shop. I still have the boat and admire it every day.
I am up to 37 vintage duck boats. I recently a purchased a Nate Quillin Monitor built in 1886 all original in excellent
condition with the original punt pole, gunning box, seat and floor boards. It is from membership two at the Pointe Mouillee
shooting club. Jim& Barbra Marsh wrote a great book about the history of the club. Thanks for thinking of me when the duck boat was
auctioned off from the Orvis shop. She is a real beauty.

Yes Tom, while I remember you, and the entire ordeal like it was last week, I'm so sorry I forgot your last name...

That entire story is a cherished memory I will never forget.

If you ever put together a display, I'd sure like to come visit!

Jon

I sure will Jon. It is great to hear from you. It was a pleasure to deal with you, and together, we saved another piece of history.
