well im new to the wooden and fiberglass duck boats and i would like to buy one. i found a wooden boat here in vermont with a trailer for $1000. the boat appears to be a skiff type, it has a slight v hull, its 13.5 ft long, bow is squared off, and the motor mount is indented from the stern. the question i have is when i checked out the boat the stern compartments were filled with water and the wood seemed to be rotted. the rest of the hull was intact and seemingly good condition, how hard would it be to repair the rotted panels inside and if those rotted parts could be a good indication if the rest of the boat is bad to? please any advice is very welcome.

A thousand bucks for a 13.5' ROTTED wooden boat is a little steep if ya ask me. Sometimes repair is harder and just as expensive as building a new one. Is the trailer new? Does it come with a cherry 15 or 25hp motor? That would be the only reason I'd consider the asking price...unless it is a highly desireable collectors piece..which I doubt.

no motor and the trailer isnt great i have no idea if its a collectors piece and its an odd looking skiff i havent seen one like it anywheres else it resembles a layout boat but deeper with a squared off back and transom. it was made form plywood and has 2 stern compartments and a foreward comparment. the degree of rot was like when plywood gets real wet and bubbles. the boat was for sale for two season and the water was in there both times i looked at it.

Ed, I've never built a new boat but I have repaired and re-built a few. Although the end result was usually satisfying;the time, effort and money spent were not. Once you start pulling rotted plywood or planks away you will undoubtedly find more rot. Maybe the structural beams are rotted as mine were and you will need to replace them; not an easy task. I don't mean to scare you but be carefull with project boats. They sink fast. Kevin
P.S. check out my classified post "sneakbox for sale in new jersey" it is rebuilt and will be ready for sale delivery in the spring.

Ed,

From your description, that's the same boat that was off Route 78 (near Missisquoi NWR) during the fall. I believe it's a Devlin BB2.

I never stopped to look at it. Even passing by at 50 mph I could tell she was a bit rough.

Lee's right. Repairing that boat may be more labor intensive than building it from scratch. For that reason, I'd consider building a boat from Devlin's plans before trying to restore this one.

yes sir thats the one yea the thing was full of water, you hunt up this way much? hey you must know my friend bomber i think hes your new police chef.

Bomber isn't with the State Police anymore? Tim Bombardier..right? Hey, if it was a Bb2 or 3 and the back compartments were full of water..then he never put foam in them like they were supposed to have...I bet the freeze/thaw on those full of water really messed them up too.

nope bomber aka tim bombardier is the new barre vt police chef and from the news lately hes kicking crimes ass in that town. yea there was no foam at all in that boat, so im probably gonna look else where for a gunning boat.

will do, as soon as i can get ahold of him to see what hes carving for an upcoming banquet, and a case of cork. been calling him once, twice a week but only get his machine. hes an elusive critter.
