Online Outboards?

Anybody have experience buying from Online Outboards, https://onlineoutboards.com

Thinking about a new 15 or 20 for my 14' tin boat, and their prices are pretty good, with excellent availability. A bit nervous buying something that large online and wondering if anyone has dealt with them.

While you are here, thoughts on:

15 hp vs 20hp: For most manufacturers, these are the same weight, so I assume the same powerhead with a different fuel delivery system. I've been perfectly happy with my 15, but for the same weight, a little extra HP would be nice when carrying a load of wet decoys and camo cloth in the late season. Don't need it, but don't think it will do any harm.

Brands? Options are Suzuki and Tohatsu at the low end of price and weight, with Mercury and Honda about $500 higher and 10 pounds heavier.

At 56, and stepping up to a four stroke motor rather than my old 2 stroke, is it worth a few bucks and an extra 10 pounds to get electric start? Going to use it to duck hunt in Maine--reliable cold weather starts are critical.

Just starting to think about this, and not in a hurry.

Jeff, I think all of those motors are good and have no preference. If there are dealers of any of them in your area I might go with that brand in case you need one. I would definitely get electric start. A friend of mine had a Honda several years ago and it was a good motor but took a little cranking in the cold weather(he had electric start). Do you want to even find out? Absolutely not. You will appreciate it even more in the next few years, particularly where you are. Take the horsepower, get the 20, it will never hurt you to have it. The extra money for both of those are worth it. Good luck and I will be interested to know which one you decide on.

Sorry I don't have any ideas on the first part of the question, maybe someone else will.

We're in the same boat (pun intended).
Our shoulders and elbows are only getting older, get the electric start!
I've been looking at them as well, to replace my pull start 25 2-stroke.
I'm leaning towards the Suzuki or Tohatsu 20hp electric start.
Just a hair lighter than my 25, and much better fuel efficiency, less smoke, no 50:1 and no more pull starting.
And you can drop down from a 6 gallon to 3 gallon tank. Use a Jet ski batter to crank it, less weight than a full size marine deep cycle.
Once I get the cash (which will hopefully with this years bonus this winter), I'm going to get quotes from all the local places and look at OnlineOutboards.

I bought a 6hp Tohatsu from them a couple years ago with no issues - delivered right to my garage.

Get the 20hp over the 15hp and always get electric start if available. You won't regret either decision.

Jeff,
I have no experience with on line outboards. Electric start would be nice but power trim and tilt would be even better. I just purchased a 25 Yamaha four stroke two years ago for my TDB and wish I would have optioned the power trim and tilt.

Thanks all. There are some other online retailers that have bad reputations, but I've never heard anything negative. Thanks for confirming.

Now my choice seems to be a Montana trip this fall or a new outboard. Airfare, lodging and an Air BnB will be about the same prices as a new 20 hp 4 stroke.

Until Covid in 2020, my wife and I did an annual trip to the Yellowstone area for five years. Most years we stayed in Cooke City, MT. We also did parts of some trips in Gardiner, MT, Cody, WY, and Island Park, ID. Primary activities were wildlife watching in the Lamar and Hayden valleys and in the Swan Lake Flats, and trout fishing anywhere with native cutthroat populations--Upper Yellowstone, Lamar and a few smaller streams I won't mention.

Cooke City is pretty remote. No grocery store, but plenty of bars!

Yes. Looks a little higher in price than outboards direct.

Interesting that right now both have Suzuki's steeply discounted, and that neither is selling Yamaha's anymore. I know the one I first asked about did ~3 years ago the last time I was looking. I wonder if Yamaha has gone to a limited set of dealers?

Hi Jeff,

I can't speak to the online process, but I did run a 25hp 2 stroke Suzuki on my Devlin when I had it. I did not have any issues with it at all. On the Yamaha side of things, it would only cost you a phone call, but might be worth it you are considering that brand. New England Correct Craft, https://www.neccboats.com/ , in Rochester, NH. No Tax. I have purchased a couple Yamaha outboards from them, a 60 and 6hp. Craig and Fred are great to deal with. Not that my name carries any clout there, but I did refer two others to them this season that purchased motors, so could at least be a starting point. They're just solid people and if I repower my DW, it will be with them. Good luck in your quest.

Jeff,
I have a 20 hp electric start power trim Suzuki on my big boat as a kicker. I have had it for 5 years and almost 100 trouble free hours. The things I like about it are it is fuel injected, has a backup pull start and can run/start with a dead battery.
