Opening in FL

My Opening weekend wasn't too bad. I almost decided to spend the night out on the marsh as the wind I was paddling into was a lot heavier than I could handle by myself. However, I did not choose to do that and it ended up taking me about 3 hours to paddle 1-1.5 miles. I am so very very very sore!

It was a beautiful weekend though, I got in a bit of shooting, there weren't many hunters out, tested the new longjohns out (cuz it was cold out there...Pete, I got a pair of those Icebreakers and they are wonderful!!! You aren't the only person who reccommended them to me but I'm glad y'all did), got a few woodrows (and the prettiest hen I've ever shot) and a few ringers...

I took several photos while I was out there...

Dani, Good to hear from you. Our season is just about iced up. Put most of the gear away today, doesn't look like there will be any open water or time to go now for the rest of this year. I need to get some pictures resized from ND and get some posted. Sounds like you had a good opener in spite of the looong paddle. Good luck.

Dani,

I've been wacthing the weather down there trying to decide what to pack. Vickie said a cold front came though and everyone was bundling up. It was 14 degrees here Friday morning for opener of deer season. I don't care where your from that's cold. Glad your getting some shooting. I'm looking forward to coming down this week. You look mighty cold in the photo. Pack everything you got for Nova Scotia. I'm sure your watching the weather is turning up there. I't no fun when you can't quit shivering.

Take care,

Ed L.

3 hours of paddling - wow! Look at it as training for the Game & Fish position you want. With that in mind, go do some more! Oh, and shoot some ducks while you are out training. Nice pics.

remember that cold for us is around about 30's or so. Still cold, especially when it's a humid, windy cold, but it's not quite like the 14 degrees up there. Yup I was hunkered down in my parka and trying to stay warm and optimistic. That's difficult when you are looking down the channel seeing how far you have to go with a headwind coming straight down it that's at least 25 mph:

It's not the first set of signs, but the second....waaaaay down in the back of the picture was where I had to go to begin the trek to the left to get to the boat ramp, and I was at the halfway point just sitting there.

You ought to have a blast while you're down here, it's a shame we won't be able to catch up this trip.

and it turns out to be a great hunt. We were covered in birds...mainly ringers and teal and we just didn't know where to look. We were limited by 0800 and started kicking ourselves for not just sitting back and picking shots a little better. Oh well, that's opening for you :)

My little foamy boat struck again...and did a great job, as usual. Its low profile allowed us to get in and set up in the short grasses where the birds were congregating and we were deadly....

What a great way to start a season...

That's dedication for sure. You definitely have the fever. Is this a non motorized area or do you just not have a small motor for your foamy boat? The Rickshaw motor or the homemade weedwacker motor like Mark W. built would be just the ticket for your little boat. You have a chance to witness first hand a way of hunting most of use will only every get to read about. our going to have a blast in Canada. You and Steve take plenty of pictures while your in Nova Scotia. Hopefully next year all be around to hunt together.

Dani,

Glad you got the Icebreakers, you'll be glad you did when in NS. Last weekend was a weekend for Icebreakers of both kinds for me. Down to the mid teens at night and my main landing frozen in. Had to drive 25 miles for an open landing. Got out and set up in a non-ideal spot but it was the only one open and relatively free of ice. Then it started snowing and the Goldeneyes came. A minute never went by for the first two hours that I didn't either see GEs or hear them - one of those days you know you won't forget for a long time.

Aren't those ring bills fun? I hit the migration perfectly a few weeks ago and had them decoying with abandon.

Have fun in NS.
