outboard mtr weight help

So I am getting a couple of older OB's going. A 1966 9.5hp Evenrude and a 1974 15hp Johnson. The 9.5 was my Grandpa's and I bought it from his estate years ago with his 12 ft. Hewescraft. I used it for years before going on to bigger outfits but never got rid of it. I have the owners manual for it and it weighs 60 lbs. The 15 was my late hunting partners motor and I never got the manual for it. I found the manual on Ebay and have it coming but it will be a week or so before it arrives so..........just wondering if anyone here has a similar motor and/or owners manual with the weight listed?

When I lifted them both while getting them to the test tank, etc the 15 seemed a lot heavier than the 9.5?? but I am old ya know :) I'll use them both on the 12 foot boat. I remember that the 15 was a lot more motor than the 9.5 back when they were both in use. The 15 put a 14 foot MirroCraft up on plane with two guys easily. The 9.5 barely planes the 12 foot with one person. Hope to use them both on the boat. The 9.5 has a better reputation for trolling down slow and the 15 gets up and goes pretty good for the little motors. Anyway, anyone have th weight of that 1974 15 hp Johnson? Thanks in advance.

Thanks folks.

That 15hp sure seemed like it was more than 18 lbs heavier but then I guess that would be roughly 25% increase in weight?

Dave and Brad~

I had a 9.9/15 horse Johnson of that vintage (1978) and - sure enough - my recollection is 78 pounds.

BTW: I believe the only difference between the 9.9 and 15 was the carburetor jets.

Wish I still had mine.....

Official 1974 Johnson manual says:
15R74 (1974 short shaft recoil start) =65#
15RL74(1974 long shaft recoil start) = 66#
15E74 (1974 short shaft electric start) = 73#
15EL74 (1974 long shaft electric start) = 74#
Don't we all wish model numbers made sense like that today?
Some of the 9.9/15 motors just have different jets, some need a different carb and some need a different exhaust tuner. Same story with the 25/35 family and the three cylinders. Maybe some others but those I know for sure. The only way to be sure is to compare motor part numbers number by number. Tedious but kinda fun too. The older 9.5s were not the same family as the newer 9.9/15. The old 9.5s had several design problems but the 9.9/15s were much improved, I really like them. IMHO

Thank you.

When I was packing them around that 15 sure seemed like more than 5 lbs heavier than gthe 9.5 but........I guess it must have been the balance point?

Thanks again for the information. I'll get them both checked out and tuned up and then see how they function on the boat.
